View Full Version : Competition

As most of you that have spoken to me, read my posts, played against me know I'm fairly competitive. I'd like to suggest that now that term has started and there is a greater number of players that we have 1v1 matches of certain games and keep a ladder. I doubt I'd rule any ladder (driving games aside) but I like the attitude and visible goal structure of a ladder system. The concept of being No1 spot for a month (until the next meet) would be great and the competition to get back to No1 spot after being knocked off would be good. These tourney games probably won't last long and can be played simultaneously.
Just a thought.

I was thinking this coming back from the flat at the weekend. We really could use more online play. A competitive pvp or small team based competition would be a great way to do this.
There must be several apps online that can do this. For a start, there's sourceforge. A quick trawl gives ladder (http://ladderphp.sourceforge.net/ladderphp_1.0/ladder/), and I'm sure there must be programs to facilitate this offline.
Great idea :)
The easiest and simplest way I can think of is be creating a new category in the forum called "ladder" and having the top sticky post as the ladder. (perhaps a sticky per game?)
Competitions can then progress through the posts in that forum. Mods can update the ladder as necessary and keep everything ticking over. Challenges can be made through the forum or PM's.
Does that sound OK? I think we may need some rules, but fantastic idea!

Tis a nice idea indeedy.
Q3 1v1
UT:2004 1v1
CS:S Knifey Knifey 1v1
CS:S Pistol 1v1
Driving.. stuff
Basically have lots, as it wouldnt be too hard to organise. And the more varieties there is, the more competition there be. Prestige going to who can play Starcraft the worst :?

meh. out of all the games you've listed, the only one I can see as being fun 1v1 is 'driving', and that was kinda vague. Starcraft 1v1 works. Soul Calibur 2 / [insert beatemup here] works 1v1. I can't really think of any FPS that works well 1v1, save maybe Quake 1.

UT2004? That's got a good 1v1 mode.
I see your point though, would it be better to have a 2v2 ladder, or other small teams? Rouge Spear (I think?) can handle 2v2, and it was quite fun.
I do like the idea of a 1v1 ladder though. It's got potential.

I think we'd have to settle on thw old favorites.
Q3 sure but UT?
Also limit the number of a particular genre like we could have HUNDREDS of FPS title ladders but what is the point when you have Q3?
The point of the ladder is for a spot of rivalry, showmanship and insentive to practice (like we need one). Rules for games are generaly available by the major tourney organisers and they should probably be adapted to our needs.
knife fights sounds good though.

Then rather than have umteen different ladders going on, we could all agree on a list of games deemed good, and have a random game picked every month.

how do you work a 2v2 ladder. do we get to pick the 2?

2v2 ladders for games like Ghost Recon and CSS work well. Just as long as you have comms. i.e Ventrilo :)

I'm up for Raven Shield or Ghost Recon. I quite like the sneaky games (even though I'm a bit shit at them).
CS:S and Dawn of War as well, if anyone wants to.
We can probably do these 1v1 & 2v2 games while other larger games are going on. Or we could devote some time especially to tournament games at the LAN. Depends what everyone wants.

Ok dave <other moderator> your next task is to organise a play off table, I'd do it but you know who is coming to the lan better than me. Post that up so we know who we will face in the 1v1 tourny at what stage.

Of course! Although the limited Force Power option (Jump, Push, Pull and Saber Throw) is pretty good.

Ooh JK2 duelling would be cool. But any force powers just kinda wreck the skill to have to combo. Never played academy :(

I academy you need some of the powers to pull off a few combos. The Pull-Impale combo is classic.

I think this is a task better done at the LAN itself. There we will know exactly how many people are up for the tourneys, how many people have the games and so on. To do this on the forums would take hours, but in real-life it would take a matter of minutes.

hmm yeah i am up for a starcraft Ladder ^^.. just a pixie said, so everyone can do a bit of showing off :P
And UT and Q3, i would also be up for that too ^^
But i think it would be a bit hard to do a 1v1 Cs, may be if we get 20 people in a lan we get make 4 or 5 teams ??

It looks like we're going to get around 20 people at the LAN. There are normally friends of friends that turn up as well, which is why I'm aiming for around that number.
That would be ideal as far as tournaments go.

Sounds good and a decent number of people at the LAN will be much appreciated.
