A Review here (http://craig.gp2x.de/review/GP2XReview.html)

So, I'm buying a 500GB HD as well. I bring my keyboard, mouse and gamepad to Spain with me as well as this beauty, which plug in to the cradle extension. Then I buy a TV (or have access to one), and plug it in. Volia! Gaming system, music player, movie player, text reader, Linux box!

Did I say I was excited? :D

That looks pretty smart, and £100 for something you'd never actually need to buy games for is a sweet deal! If I didn't already have a PSP and a Neogeo pocket and a GBA then I'd be tempted lol. Strings will probs want one if he see's that Amiga emulator ;)

You must bring this to the lan btw, I'd love to see it. I warn you though, if it's loaded with a NeoGeo emulator then I may have to steal it

I was gonna go for this. But I went for the PSP instead. It's processor is stronger for emulation and homebrew in general., especially the Amiga one. Plus I get all the awesome PSP games to play... like puzzle quest :)

you did what?!

Upon further reading this sounds like a pretty good thing to play with. finally, a platform that makes legitimately backing up games quick and easy(er)!

Although I know I'd just end up getting a USB wifi adapter and using it as a streaming music player for the most part if I ever got one...

It seems somewhat similar to my DS's R4 card, but more targetted towards homebrewing, rather than playing roms. The screen looks very nice indeed. It's just a shame it's not touch-screen, otherwise you probably could have found some homebrewed way to run the DS roms available (though only those that you already own in cartridge form, you naughty pirates).

Saves you bringing your entire rig to Spain though. I'd bet even buying that thing was cheaper than the shipping costs ;)

Exactly! Way less hassle and lots of fun to boot! :D Safer too. Was having kittens thinking about it getting transported. :(

You see I've had a long and rubbish history with Sony so PSP is a big no no. Plus the screen and music output is better on the GP2X (or so I've read, will have to see). Regardless, this little guy is a portable PC not a gaming machine which is what I'm looking for. For the same kind of money I "could" have bought a second-hand laptop maybe, with similar function. It would have been frustrating though not being able to play modern games at a reasonable FPS. I just hope it's as good as it's been made out to be.....

Well, it is Korean made, and those guys really know how to game. Just make sure you get Starcraft on it ;)

Is it wrong that as soon as I read that I had a mental image of you laying eggs and then kittens hatching from them?

You'd have a veritable army of them....oh god....

Music output might be better, but I got a Sharp Jap PSP, so I know the screen is top notch. It's only a portable computer in as far as people make decent homebrew/emulators for it. I know the PSP community for that is rather huge, how big is it for the GP2X?

Well, I must say it's pretty awesome. After spending most of yesterday and today fannying about with it mind. Solidly built, very good sound and the screen is excellent.

I had my new 500GB drive hooked up, can stream video, music and pictures of it. No problems there. Still not much luck with the keyboard and mouse but I still don't really know what I'm doing yet so.....

Emulation seems very good so far. Had an Amiga running earlier with Shadow of the Beast, played a couple of different SNES games, some Mega Drive games as well as Doom II and Quake. Still having a bit of difficulty getting the NeoGeo to work but it's getting there I think and I'm going to try the Mega CD as well.

Bah, there's so much to try!

If you get MAME working you can forget NeoGeo - MAME has all NeoGeo games. Metal Slug FTW

Good point man! I'll have a go at that tomorrow. :)

But I now have Ultima VII going as well as the PC version of Flashback! Flashback! On the move!

Awesome!!!!!! :D

the PC version of Flashback! Flashback! On the move!

Awesome!!!!!! :D

Indeed Awesome, why the PC version though? The megadrive port is spot on, and I woulda thought it would be easier than emulating DOS/Windows games?

Is seems that the source code for the original code was release so it's a proper direct port rather than being emulated. I'll have to compare the different versions though, but I hear it went something like this.....

PC
Amiga
SNES
Jaguar (but who cares?)
Mega Drive

As I say though, proof will be in the pudding. :) Mmmmmm pudding.

Well I played it on the Mac when it was first out, and I have the Megadrive copy. Graphics might be slightly worse on the MD but the gameplay is fine.

totally man, it's just graphical and sound differences between the versions. Got SCUMMVM working today, Beneath a Steel Sky! :D

They are adding a touchscreen, that seems to be all.

If PSP had touch screen no-one would have to make a choice ever again. Dammit.

Not really, IMO the DS is worth considering on the basis of Nintendo's first party games alone...

In my humble opinion, the GP2X has a lot going for it in terms of hardware awesomeness; the only thing it isn't benefitting from is first party games and content, which is where millions of pounds worth of money is being poured into by the other big players (nintendo, sony etc).

ps, pixie: www.vtunnel.com - we just added youtube support, pop it in and it should work just fine.

Thank you very much! Bookmarked and minded. :p Cheers.

The new version looks pretty much the same as you say, but a touch screen is just frankly awesome. The DS admittedly has one already and can run SCUMM etc but this guy is just MUCH more flexible, better screen, sound etc. It doesn't have the big company support which is true, but it's not targeting that market. I'd like to point out that the GP2X as it stands has not only some great home-brew and new commercial games (Wind and Water (http://www.wind-water.net/) is damn good) but has FULLY compatible and FULL speed emulators, including Amiga now and PS1 in the works. Lemmings, UFO, Cannon Fodder will be very sweet with a touch screen. The emulator already has mouse support but of course you need to be using the cradle to use it. I guess not most people don't want this type of handheld, and I guess if I hadn't skipped of to Spain I may not have thought about getting one.

However, I'm glad I did!

Once I get round to it, I'll post a full review of the current version. :D

lemmings with touchscreen is awesome - i've got it on the DS.

actually had use for some ds wardriving today to keep checking the wireless as we had a major outage on campus (moodle actually asplode! along with everything being down for 3 hours.)
