View Full Version : Star Wars: The Force Unleashed
Set between Revenge of The Sith and A New Hope the game will star characters both new and old and is being written by Chris Armstrong. Players will get a chance to use a range of weapons and lightsabers, including new force powers of devastating potential - as proved by the opening sequence in the trailer where the player character uses Force Pull to crash a Star Destroyer into a planet.

erm, freaking awesome! Imagine the multiplayer carnage, it's about time there was an upgrade of Jedi Academy.
Yeah, gibs would be nice. You are playing a Dark Jedi for crying out loud! Image Force choke, applied to a head maybe.....

Just noticed this is not being slated for a PC release. Sucky. :(

Assuming it lives up to it's potential, another good reason to buy a 360 :-)

Force Unleashed demo impressions (http://www.gamecritics.com/force-unleashed-demo-impressions)
"It seems like job one when making a Star Wars game would be to make sure that the lightsabers are top-notch, but apparently that was lost on the developers over at Lucasarts, since their lightsabers are woefully underpowered. Here’s a tip: If you have to hit someone more than once with a lightsaber, it’s not a G-D lightsaber! This isn’t Devil May Cry—I shouldn’t have to hack away at my opponents like I’m chopping down a tree with a butterknife."
That's disappointing, the original Jedi Knight was one hit kills other than the 1v1 Jedi battles, plus you could lop off limbs. Maybe just a demo restriction?

Didn't you hear? Everything is made with cortosis weave these days!
I've also heard that the lightsabres are a little disappointing, but others have pointed out that this game's main focus is on Force powers, and not lightsabre combat.

Play it, I find they die too soon as it is, fucking them up is just too much fun. There is no dismemberment, I mentioned this a long time ago and it has since been confirmed.
Considering we get to play a black heart Sith I think it fits nicely that he'd not kill them instantly, making it fun to boot. Also the original DF generally were about 1v1 or 1v2 fights. This is more about 6+ fights. You are just that much harder than everyone 1 hit kills would be boring and when you add that certain manoeuvres can take out 4 or 5 guys in a 3 hit combo you realise that it is balanced. Yes I'd prefer this if it was rated 18, full gore. Yes I'd prefer it if it was 1080p. Yes I'd prefer this if there was an element of character customisation (like playing as a girl). But the fun is undeniable and for that I'll let it off because nothing recently has made me whoop with glee like this does.

This just in: one hit kills no fun to play. Besides, all the difficulty selector does is change the bad guy hitpoints and damage, so you can easily make them one hit kills if you want to.
Even from the demo, it's clear this game is far-and-away the best representation of being a jedi (i.e. unstoppable killing machine) to date.

Are you meaning Jedi duels, or just general combat? In DF: Jedi Knight you would face up against larger numbers of enemies, easily 6+ + AT-ST's + probe droids :p, in the larger levels. This was even more so the case in Mysteries of the Sith were you needed to dart about using Force power while slicing, and deflecting laser blast in large groups or face getting lacerated.
They seemed to tone the numbers down quite a bit in JK: Outcast and JK: Academy, engine restrictions I guess.
Yeah, that article is very negative, and I was just surprised after hearing such good things from both yourself and Iain. Still looking forward to trying it. :)

As you know I only really played Outcast and Academy, so I was used to only 2-3 enemies at a time. Even when there were 4 or more you dealt with them in a 1v1 style. FU is all about getting them together so you can kill them all together.

That reviewer looks familiar... not sure if it's him but there was a game out a while ago (I think it was God of War but I'm not sure) where one reviewer derided it in what seemed a particularly attention getting manner. Anyway, I wouldn't put too much stock in one look-at-me know-it-all, he hasn't even got his facts straight. I'd say go look for other reviews, but really, just find someone with a PS3 or 360 and play it.

Played it. Must admit the targeting system needs work, certainly annoying, and the "I must hit a Stormtrooper 5 fucking times" to kill him in Sith Lord difficulty is also a bit silly. However, it's ludicrously good fun. Grabbing guys, flicking them over your shoulder, smashing them into the roof, cantering them about topping over their mates then using them as a weapon against an AT-ST.........*loving sigh* ah yes, this is good fun!! Dropping heavy metal boxes on folks heads....... :) Particularly loved smashing open doors (buttons are for wusses) and ripping walkway supports out to smash TIE Fighters. :D Movement (his clothes look amazing) and flow in combat feeling pretty sweet with the combos on offer being simple (in the demo) but great fun, *slash, slash, LIGHTING SABER BITCHES!!* or *slash, slash, slash, Force push from the ground throwing enemies into the air.* want to experiment some more. :) Grip followed by saber ensuring a floating enemy with your blade in his gut is remarkable satisfying. Now only if we can find the "turn on blood and gore* cheat..........

I can't be bothered split-quoting your post, some I gonna reply to sections of it and you'll just have to work out what goes where :P
Targetting works off of where the guy faces, not the camera - this is actually a good thing since it means you can affect/attack things which are off screen.
So don't play on that difficulty. Stormtroopers will die pretty much in one hit on the default difficulty.
Have you gone fishing yet? The fools will grab onto anything to try and save themselves, even their mates... which you can use to make them help each other to their vertical doom.
I prefer slash-slash-push. Also good is choke-slash-push (dare you go the whole hog: choke-lightning-slash-push?)
Also: hold right analog up and release choke... best done in the open, and when you have some time on your hands to wait for impact.
I was trying to knock the AT-ST off the platform last night, but the lip kept it in. I wonder if there's a lip around the lift it comes up on?

Ooooo, didn't realise you could fish! :D Will they grab onto anything? I'm just having this evil idea of grabbing a Trooper, hosting him up to the roof and letting him grab onto a support, then letting go leaving the poor bugger dangling.....tehe.
I think the AT-ST can only be killed by the quicktime event, seemed that way. When I killed it last night, I'd been sitting back throwing barrels and such like, and after I took all of it's health off, it just stood there, waiting for me to finish it off.....
I get the targeting thing, it's just that sometimes it will target the trooper behind the guy you want to target, which can be infuriating. Also the range at which you can target things is unclear sometimes, but without adding more hud, I'm not sure it can be remedied.
Slash, slash, push is awesome, particularly on groups in the walkways....I can't wait to try out some of the other combos! :)

Currently my group attack is jump, dash, slash(hold), slash, slash, push, any one else alive either gets impaled on the ground or walk up to them and backward slash lightning. Just cos it looks cool. As for one hit kills, personally I'd prefer to give them the health they have in later difficulty with the health regen rate of easy modes. That way I can take my time killing them. As it is I just have to replay, over and over again. Which is no bad thing.

You can't kill the at-st with damage, but you might be able to make it fall off. I'll try again tonight.
The only problem I've had with targetting is that it prioritises grenades; which, though an understandable decision, can be really annoying if you are trying to uber-push a group of guys. If they throw one somewhere near you then your push will retarget to it, likely missing the group as a whole.
Uber-push is my favourite groupkiller btw; the five guys near the first damage mod, the corridor right after it (probably the best bit in the demo for uberpush), the rebels that run toward you as you step off the lift, and the stormtroopers behind crates on the final gantry.
Though, with the first of those groups I do sort of love the grip-hold in front of blast door-push.
The rebels with repeating blasters have ridiculous armour, even on standard difficulty; I held one in the air and waited for a tie-fighter. Tie-fighter go boom, rebel survived! (well, briefly)

Forgot to post back: there is a lip around the lift, but not where the tie-fighter wrecks the bridge, so you can in fact kill the AT-ST by pushing it off the edge :)

Full game: is awesome. Sadly is also infuriating. For the main it plays extremely well, and the story is pretty good (though it goes a bit silly at the end). It has some extremely nice touches (the imperial commander's trophy room, and the final Proxy fight for example). BUT: the jedi fights are a bit hit-and-miss; some of them you play through and are fun, while others you just feel like your hitting buttons and hoping for the best... and I'm not sure if that's cos some are good and some aren't or because I got lucky on some and not on others. The Star Destroyer section is tedious, even after you pick up the trick to it (it's extremely tedious beforehand), and the final fight... well, it's pretty tough. Reminds me a lot of Ares in God of War. Worst thing is though, that it hangs. It did it earlier when I was pretty sick of playing, so I switched off and did other stuff. Right now though, the boss is sitting with fuck all health cos I'm just about to kill him... and it's frozen. Am not happy. If it wasn't for the boss fights I'd be on for another play through as soon as I finish this one... as it stands I'm envisaging another God Of War - up the difficulty level and the bosses (particularly the final boss) become ridiculously difficult.
It's worth getting, for sure, but probably not worth the extra tenner I paid to get it a week early.
EDIT: Froze again :( More annoyingly, it's the second of two consecutive boss fights, and when you have to restart you have to fight the first boss all over again... and it can glitch too.

I'm not the biggest console fan out there but this was definitely designed for consoles. This smells like "we need cashflow" port work. My predictor is pointing strongly at AVOID!

Sith Edition Trailer (http://www.gametrailers.com/video/sdcc-09-star-wars/53016?type=flv)
Or even look at the official site (http://www.lucasarts.com/games/theforceunleashed/). This alternative universe idea is pretty cool, silly, but definitely looks like fun. I really enjoyed playing Force Unleashed on the PS3, didn't experience any of the technical issues that Iain had (it's been patched heavily since release). The game does require a high level of skill towards the end and can be unforgiving, but only makes it more rewarding. The only section of the game that really disappointed me was the Star Destroyer sequence. The controls are counter-intuitive and even once grasped, the section feels shallow and deflated. Potential in this section was insanely high but it failed.
Loved the combat though, often intense and very satisfying. The Force while I didn't entirely agree with the flashy visuals, does "feel right", pull, push, lighting and the lightsaber combos all are great fun. Particularly pulling enemies into the air and letting them grab their friends in an effort to stay on the ground. :) The story is pretty good as well, I even sat and watched all of the cut-scenes after completing it. Starkiller is an excellent character and is really brought to life by Samuel Stewart. His story is really very enjoyable and fits in well with the rest of the SW universe.
I suspect that if the controls are well mapped onto the PC (i guess you could just use a pad) then it would become the definite version.
These are the levels that are available as DLC already through, do you really want to pay for them twice?
