good day chaps, i was just wonderin' about the whole LAN thing, if i were to participate in one, how would i go about it and would i need any of my own hardware or software? I ask because i am despairingly bereft of both at the moment...

Spare parts, eh?
Lets get into one-upmanship here then.
{Assuming my dad hasn't dumped them, which I asked him not to..}
I should be able to supply an old but functional computer (don't know what would actually run on it, but still), CRT monitor, keyboard, mouse and a pair of socks.
GG, you lose. =P

Hi there :)
For the next LAN we will have to implement the minimum spec idea (posted on the forums a while back). Basically, if your computer can run source, it's fine.
Also, I'm not sold on the idea of borrowing a computer for the day, so many things can go horribly wrong, set up can take ages etc. I'll have to have a word with the committee about this.

K dokey.
I met this guy yesterday in Philosophy and I advised him to pop over here to get acqainted etc etc
The guy is sound so it would be cool if we were allowed to lend him a spare PC/laptop or something. Already told him I have a spare laptop etc.
Just have to wait to see what Dave comes back with regarding lending him a computer.
Edit: Wiggy your E-Mail address doesnt work mate.

And my apologies for not having any equipment, i'm working on it but i'm none too hopeful that it'll work, but, you know, if people are willing to give me stuff, i'll more than happily alleviate you of that burden

actually you don't have a brand spanking new modem/router. They only sent us a router. Cockbites. Besides you can use the net everyday at Uni, quit whining you blue impish device.
Oh yeah, before I forget, hello to all, I will be seeing you all at the next lan but probably not before, unless you go to the weekly session on Wednesday, as I am also bereft of internet being as I now share a flat with the blueness of pixie.

I don't worry so much about my Kill to Death ratio in games, in CS I worry more about the team scores, in BF2 I worry more about my points (they seem more significant to me.) etc

Damn this piece of poo. And thanks to works budget cuts ( my hours have been cut to 20 next week) it looks like unless I get me a nice graduate job I'm gonna be without XP for the next 2 months. :-(

nope I'm pretty sure it's in the constitution that any one using leet speak dies and his/her head is served unto the master (DAve) on a spike as an offering of peace and understanding from the lord of administration.

I would have to disagree based on this:
no bigotry
no insulting the mods
good netiquette (no shouting or leetspeak)
use common sense at all times
no spam
If you want the help of a moderator, give them a private message.
Mods are your friend, they are here to help you, but at the same time, stop anyone from doing anything too stupid. If you disagree with their decision to mod your post, let them know about it in calm sensible language. They have the last say in any dispute.
If you do something silly, you can expect the following:
First offence: you will be warned
Second offence: you will be temporarily banned for 1 week
Third offence: Banned for a year.
The mods are reasonable people, but You have been warned
Nowhere in there does it even suggest that leetspeak is subject to different rules, on the contrary the fact that it's mentioned in the list of examples of bad netiquitte suggests that it's specifically subject to the same rules.
Unless we're dealing with super-secret rules that no-one gets told about?

I've never seen it anywhere on the site or forums.
Now, if it's something that exists only in the heads of the older members and you're going to try and apply it to things then that's rather wank of you, to be perfectly frank. =/

Ok then, if you think that first offense bans are the way to go debate it with DAve and see if he'll agree to a change in the rules, however as they stand it's a second offense ban, as for the constitution, I trawled through the forum quickly and couldn't see it anywhere, so I stand by my claim that invisible rules cannot be applied in any fairness.
As for Yega being offensive, what?
I didn't accuse him of being offensive, and I'm fairly sure I wasn't acting as if he had been, if I came across that way I apologise.

Actually this was a two pronged attack.
One. I agree with the rules that state that leet speak should be left out of the forum. This lead to an, I had assumed, ammusing and obviously OTT reactionary statement. (Must remember Sideshows rules).
Two. There IS a constitution, there is even a board of commity members and all that goes with it. Yet I recall no AGM being announced, no voting involved or any other freedom for the members to express thier views on how the society should be run. This is something of a sticking point with me as I always wanted to run a Gamers Soc in Aberdeen but we only ever got 3 members and they were console players. Hohumm.
It should be noted that I am not an oldbie. This is my first year with the society and infact I have only known most of these folk about one month longer than you guys. I have the advantage that I live with the secretary so I am privy to all that goes on but equally I'd like to think that I take an interest to find things out.
Fyndir, no, I did not think you were being abusive until you suggested that it was a bit 'wank' to hide information. Although I agree with the sentiment the statement was a little harsh.
Just because you can't see the rules does not mean they do not exist. This is a lesson you will learn (if not already then soon).
And lastly. No Fyndir, your head is safe. It will stay on your shoulders and I suspect that noone would enforce a ban on you for using leet speak. Especially in the manner in which you used it. All the above was simply me being bored and thinking I could ammuse the other board members by insiuating that you had commited a mortal sin and that the draconian leader that is DAve would need to be appeased by an offering of noob blood. This is not real. Nor is the insinuation that such crimes would be punished in such a way written in the constitution. The constitution is real, however it may be subject to change this year, for Niall, who shall be champion will demand regular noob blood.
The above, is again, meant to be taken lightly.

Yes, there is a constitution. It's not been ratified by the members yet. It's a bit of a circular situation, if we don't have an agm, then we can't ratify it, but we don't have a constitution to go by.
Yes, I agree it is a bit wank. I've seen two GUNsocs fall apart because they didn't put anything into writing or affiliate with the SRC. That is one of my main aims for next year (to get an AGM and ratify the board / elect new positions)
The sole reason I didn't want to push for an early AGM is the club is still young. I thought there was a strong chance of a new board having no experience and the club would disolve. I think there are enough of a hard-core membership that this is no longer a worry.
In short, I would like an AGM in Q1/Q2 next year. I'll have to talk to Bluepixie and Exuus about the best way to achieve this.
Two. There IS a constitution, there is even a board of commity members and all that goes with it. The constitution will go up on the forum later today then. I probably should have put something up eariler, but I just forgot.
At the moment, we're acting like benevolant dicators, we listen to what you want and then pick the ideas we think would benefit the membership.
The forum (which is one of the main areas of feedback we get, aside from talking to the members in the pub and at the lan) is a great place for members to get things done at the lans. The CS and Starcraft tournaments are two examples.
As I say, the AGM is one of my priorities. I want the club to last after I stop being a student, and the transition to democracy will be smooth and painless. That's the theory anyway.
