View Full Version : Why a DM game for the next LAN

Do you really feel that we are missing out on an important area of gaming? I don't, or I'd play more DM games. Frankly if you wanted to have a bash at any iD DM i'm well up for it but ultimately DM gets boring quickly unless you are winning (or have a chance of winning). Why not try and introduce a new genre? You know where I'm heading with this, IL2 of course. I saw muppet having some fun in FS and I know a few other folk that'd be up for a spot of dogfighting. IL2 runs on everything (even phills old rig!!!) and supports enough players for all.

Personally speaking I love DM games, and I hate flight sims, hence I'm not even remotely in favour of this.

Just my $0.02

UT tends to be fun because no-one seems to do spectacularly better than everyone else most of the time, but to be honest a lot of other DM games get dominated and turn into a yawn fest.

Like playing Source against youngteam when they're playing to win and not messing around.

It's an interesting suggestion. I've hardly ever played flight sims properly, and would be willing to give it a try, an it'd give me an excuse to use my joystick properly, but drumming up enough support to make it happen might be hard.

Pretty much agree with Yega. DM is only interesting 1v1, and I don't see that happening at lan.

Yeah, I'm not a big fan of deathmatch myself, but I believe that a lot of people like an hour of it for a laugh.

Some sort of combat flight sim would be really good fun I think - it'd certainly vary it up a little. Tell me more about IL-2. Is it quite easy to pick up and play? Capable of handling ~30 people in one game? If it is, I think we should timetable it and give it a shot.

I'm keen to introduce fresh, fun new games to club. WiC was a good move at the last LAN. I think BF2142 will make its first proper appearance at the next LAN, too. IL-2 could be quite good.

If only we could get X-Wing vs Tie-Fighter going.....

IL-2 is set in the second world war, so guns and non guided rockets and speeds generally below 400km/h. Knowing how a plane flies helps (obv) but it is very easy to pick up. I think niall took about a weekend of playing till he was:
a) convinced he wanted a joystick
b) competent enough to shoot me down

Joystick helps but any standard controller is going to be ok, I've played with a joypad before and you can do just fine with that. Keyboard and mouse does not work so well and you'll die, alot. Plenty of realism settings to make sure the n00bs don't get frustrated at blowing their engine by not setting the correct prop pitch etc.

So for those of us that own neither a joystick nor a joypad this will be a huge waste of time....

In the interests of fairness, I'd suggest we add the option of a flight sim to the roll-off poll on DM games (assuming one get's made), but tbh I don't see many people getting too enthusiastic about a game which you can't play without buying a new peripheral, not to mention the fact that plenty of people don't like flight sims. I know I'm not about to run out and buy a joystick just to play IL-2 at LANs!

I don't know how well joypads would work, but I've got a couple of wired Xbox 360 controllers that I could lend out should the need arise.

Hex, try it before you sign it off, as you've always tried to tell me when I write off console games. IL-2 is not like a jet sim, it is from a different era and far more fun as you can always see your opponent and never get a 'beyond visual range kill'.

I'll gladly try it if someone can lend me a joypad/joystick (so as to give it a fair try). I guess the best plan would be to give it an hour at the next LAN and see if it's reckoned to be any good. I still vote we pick a replacement DM game for the next LAN, and then if IL-2 is reckoned to be a better game than the DM title we can change the timetable for LAN 4.

Tbh though whatever happens with the GOTY slot in the timetable, I'll be campaigning for some UT3 when that gets a proper release :-D

I'll campaign for UT3 when most folk can run it.

One constant at freshers fair was the mention of DM games and going by previous feedback last year its the one genre people want more of/ enjoy.

In contrast I cant recall a single mention of flight sims at the fair, lans, forums or otherwise until now.

If theres a group of people passionate about arranging a game of this, then great! But realistically its a bit of a silly suggestion to replace DM... and im sure peter knew this when posting ;)

Personally I find DM intensely dull; point, click, kill, die. "Oh lolz, I knowz where all the good gunz bees. I r pwn u!!!!" The only one I find interesting is FEAR as it actually involves a bit of thought. DM time is my go to the pub time.

I'm well up for a bit of IL-2, gives me an excuse to use my fancy joystick.

I love DM, be it ffa or 1v1... it's just something that's a good staple for LANs.

But I'd be up for this. Haven't played the game in a looong time... so I'm not even sure if I'll have my old joystick.

But yeh, some of the best times we've had at LAN is when we've been trying new games. Be they shitey random multiplayer ones (Toblo) or a cool concept that everyone has to learn at the same time pretty much (Sourceforts/WiC to name a couple).

So in magical conclusion, I'd gladly have this over a DM slot. Not permanently... but it would be fun if everyone got involved.

IL-2 = win

Basically it's X-Wing in World War II. :D We'll, not exactly, but the in your face dogfighting is immense fun. And quick, take off, shoot down your enemy is only the the beginning. I remember one of the GUNS LAN were we had a maybe 4 or 5 folk playing, flying in a squadron. That was class. :) Potential is high because it's easy to pick up, it immensely satisfying and is ultimately based in team work either in combat against the AI or another human team. The thrill of DM but in the air? Come on guys! I'm sure we can get enough joysticks + gamepads to make it good.

and +1 on FEAR. I still don't understand why it's not happened yet.

Cos you've not been here to nag people into it ;-)

DM games are definitely the easiest game to just pick up and play, and the majority of member s seem to want/enjoy them. if any other genre is needed...

PRO EVOLUTION SOCCER 2008. PLAY IT!

if you dont like football games... your opinion is invalid.

flight sims etc. are all well and good also i suppose, as are games like carmageddon - it and IL-2 have been bandied about a fair bit before. stick up a poll and see what the numbers are like!

Has someone got this for us to play at LAN? Also are the keyboard controls any good? I don't have a joypad for my PC...

bomben los...

I doubt IL2'd take off [unintentional pun >.<] - we could do some late night coop missions or smaller scenarios but the fact it necessitates a joystick is probably a bit of a limitation.

The DM slot isn't something I'm a huge fan of but it's enjoyable. Seconding the 'new game and concept every LAN' sentiment. Pro Evo'd be a good starter choice as well.
