So I'm getting a DS, basically because I'm getting it retardedly cheap. What reasons are there for me to use the thing? What are the must-have games, must-have homebrew, etc...?

puzzle quest is awesome and I've played through it 3 times already, mario kart ds is great, metroid pinball's fun for a laugh, Prism: Light the Way is a good wee puzzle game,

homebrew wise, colors is cool paint program; ds reader for ebooks, pop-tire as a class homestarrunner conversion; DS doom is very playable; lemmings ds is cool; the scumm emulator works great for monkey island and sam and max.

Here's a list of stuff which runs on an R4 (homebrew is at the bottom of the page with links to all the download pages)

Prism!! Glad you like it, we tested that one :P

Hotel Dusk and the Phoenix Wright series are pretty damn good storyline wise, but no replayability so mebbe just get them off ebay for limited cash if you can. Zelda obvs. Nervous Brickdown is an AWESOME puzzler bat and ball game (tested that too :P). Advance Wars if you like turn based strategy. Mario & Luigi, Partners in Time is good. I've heard really strong reviews of Meteos for another puzzler.

If you don't get hooked on Picross, I'll break your fingers.

Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time is an excellent, quirky RPG. Meteos is addictive puzzle fun, Phantom Hourglass was disappointing and if you're after a enigmatic dungeon crawler, look up Etrian Odyssey.

Main thing you want is SCUMMVM - such a winnar on the DS.

My favourite homebrew has been the drawing app Phidias. I can't draw for shit and I enjoy using it.

I've not got into homebrew yet, GP2X has kept me busy. :) Well, for official titles I recommend:

Puzzle Quest - But you have that for the PSP right?
Metroid Prime Hunters - Awesome 1st person goodness with spot on atmosphere to boot.
Scurge: The Hive - Totally over looked action adventure, you loved Alien Breed so I think you'd like it...
Lunar Knights - Kojima Productions Botaki title for the DS, and it kicks ass!
Mario 64 DS - Need I say more!
Advance Wars - +1 It's extremely good.
New Super Mario Bros - Played this to death last year, it's great fun.
Mario Kart DS - Made of win.

And the titles I'm looking forward to now are Orcs & Elves, 1st person dungeon crawler developed by ID software! and of course W40K Squad Commander. I know it's on the PSP too, and it will be prettier, but touch screen control wins hands down for me.

I have Squad Command for PSP - touch screen would be an improvement, but the main thing the DS has is that you have the map on screen at all times.

Bluepixie
10th December 2007, 13:02
Yeah, constant map screen is definitely handy during an RTS. You never got back to the 40K:SQ thread, is it any good on the PSP?

Sideshow

Just got it, so have only played the first mission :) I'll post once I've played it a decent amount. It's not an RTS though.

Adding to Pixie's list, I'd have to say that Meteos is an awesome game. From the creators of Lumines and Lumines II, you get this great easy to learn, Tetris based rocket...space...thing. :D Fun with music and blocks that explode in trios. (See if you can beat my highscore on the air planet of 730k. :D)

Final Fantasy III, while amusing for the sake of being another Final Fantasy that has the additional advantage of being adapted for the DS, has the disadvantage of being short on save-ability. You can't do more than a quicksave in a dungeon, and because its only a quicksave, if you die, you can't just power off and try again. :C It is also lengthy and gets rather repetative after the homo dwarves.

Puzzle Quest, while also rather fun, has disadvantages of getting ridiculous. "Right...found the elf bitch i need for this, wtf?! No way am I going to go lose 20 times to something double my level to just get you some stupid leaves." I hear that unless you go a specific class (YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE!) and level a certain way, the final dude is unbeatable. A tad lame IMO.

Trauma Center: Under the Knife is a source for all sorts of ER fun. Like the busty blonde nurse who you keep thinking "man i'd bone her as this emo-ass doctor, if only he wasn't so emo." One can only hope that in some operating room doctors will panic over a heart attack victem only to have some wank, who's been playing Trauma Center far too much, jump in shouting "Don't worry! I've gotten an A rank doing this before!" and proceeds to attempt to draw pentagrams mid-air with a scalpel over the patient's chest, wondering why time isn't slowing down, while the surgeons look on slightly bemused.

Finally, Kirby Canvas Curse is a good, simple game that makes great use of the DS's touchpad. While the levels are simple enough, and there are plenty of things to unlock, the minigames are where its at. Once you've unlocked all of the bonus stuff (tunes paintbrush styles, and skins), you get the feeling slightly put out that its all over. :(

More DS games to come as I gain £££ over time.

Kirby Canvas Curse was the first game I played on the DS and made me fall in love with it. Twas at a LAN back in 2005... was awesome and still is awesome. Excellent draw-to-move concept with a decent amount of replayability (for a platformer) with collectables and unlockables etc.

Is (or was) quite hard to find it new though. Not too much of an issue I suppose, shouldn't be too hard to find second hand.

You are clearly crap at this game. The only difficulty I had was with one of the starting bosses as I didn't have many spells or much good equipment, and I only lost to him about 3 or 4 time. Also, I've played it through with all classes apart from the druid and found the final boss too easy.

Puzzle Quest still remains one of the best games on the DS IMO.

I've got PQ on the PSP, I found the whole game pretty easy going until the final boss, who I simply cannot beat. Having read FAQs online, essentially the best way to beat him (as warrior, the class I chose) is just to whore up one aspect of your character and ignore all the other stats, then obtain certain spells which work well against him.

Tbh I really enjoyed the game (and I will probs play it again with a diff class at some point) but I found the level cap really annoying, especially as I didn't know about it until I hit it, by which time it was too late! If I'd realised there was a level cap I would have ignored some of the stats in the first place tbh.

neogramps
12th December 2007, 12:37
yeah the cap in PQ is annoying; but like lewis I've completed the game 3 times and not had any trouble with the boss.

man, DS+gameboy emulator = win.

the original tetris still shits all over all sequels. none have ever had a decent difficulty scale; i stopped playing tetris dx after i got over a 900 lines

Sideshow
14th December 2007, 00:00
Not sure how original tetris beats that in a difficulty sense, since the only thing stopping infinite lines is the fact that tetris can't go on forever.

(note: Tetris is the best game ever (http://www.pausegaming.com/forum/showpost.php?p=7686&postcount=8))

neogramps
14th December 2007, 01:21
um tetris dx could have gone on forever, or all day - the fastest speed couldn't was so easy i ended up getting bored(hell i was bored after 500 lines) - original tetris - 220-ish lines is the best I can remember getting - therefore original tetris is harder.

Sideshow
14th December 2007, 10:30
Original Tetris I could play all day too :)
