My wife has just passed her viva (the doctoral exam).

Medical doctor? Nah, they only have to study for 5 years.
She's got a Ph.D. in Particle Physics now. Colliding really, really small things in ginormous detetctors. Really cool :)
I should have actually specified that at the start of the thread. Oh well. :)

Yes, the analogy is good.
What's scary is the particle accelerators are like little cities, they have their own power stations and restaraunts. They're staffed by some of the smartest people on the planet. Great fun :)

I object to the implication I do not understand these clock devices of which you speak. I know perfectly well its all to do with the sun and shadow and stuff.
