wow, what a fresh looking game - complete contrast to all the recent big titles.

Moving away from guns, darkness and big steroid monsters, with a female lead! and graphics that aren't about shine and bumps and whatever else but still looks great.

gor

I'm actually pretty taken by that footage - although it does look like its set in a cs source aim_textures map.

To0
9th May 2008, 11:46
The only reason I asked is that plainly that game is using "shine and bumps" + all the normal effects we are used to. Female lead; isn't that old now? Running and jumping "fresh" no they've just finally got a 'proper' 3d platformer.

This game lives or dies on its controls.

gor
9th May 2008, 14:30
I don't regard the running and jumping part as particularly fresh, more the setting and concept. I concede the game probably does have all the shine and bumps we are used to but it still looks like a aim_textures map. I think the primary colours are well worked, but im not so sure about them "subtly giving the user hints" (wheres the subtlety?); kind of eliminates some of the problem solving I would have thought. The female lead thing is audacious in my eyes, considering adrenaline pumped male gamers are used to guns and grunts.

but seriously, no-one has mentioned portal? female protaganist in a puzzle/jumping game?

saladin
9th May 2008, 15:46
I don't think a heroine as protagonist in a FPS is that big a deal, TBH. The first-person genre is all about decharacterising the controlled entity, so that the player can feel more immersion in the game. Heroines in general is the more important issue, though I feel the real point of contention is more the stereotypical presentation of females.

I showed that trailer to Nakita, and the one thing she commented on was "at least she's got an athletic build, without the ridiculous boobs." I feel it's a step in the right direction.

No One Lives Forever 1 and 2. It did come out for the PS2 and Mac also but it was first released on the PC.

This is true, but female leads do tend to be in adventure, 3rd person style affairs. I can only think of NOLF and Portal at the moment, might be missing some but I'm pretty sure I'm not.

For me, the thing that really stands out is the "true first person" perspective that you play from. There is no HUD and the camera is placed round about the head sort of like in F.E.A.R. The level of immersion from having a "real" body rather than being a floating entity (as in HL2) is something that can really add (or in some cases) detract from becoming one with the game world.

http://www.psu.com/media/articles/mirrors_edge/mirrors_edge_2.jpg

Granted the control system must allow for natural, responsive interaction with the game world or it'll end up feeling very clumsy (Trespasser?). If it can be played with the level of fluidity as we've seen in the trailer then it'll be a very special title. After doing a bit more the reading the storyline could be good to, check out the blurb on the wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mirrors_Edge).

I can't believe pixie even mentioned Trespasser and classicly forgot it had a female protagonist.

Anyhoo, there are a number of shitty Europop FPS games that had female leads the reason you don't remember them is that they were shit so they stuck a female lead to entice spotty teenagers. If you really want I'll trawl the web and get the names but they do exist.

Yay no hud, yay freeform, jump on the bandwagon free running, puzzle solving. Ultimately I suspect this will be playable from the 3rd person. Or hugely linear. Possibly both.

Justification for 3rd person:
Easier to control, more rewarding to see the character animations from 3rd person she's a she, only reason to do that is for the fappage. Can't fap to what you can't see.

Justification for linear:
It's a playstation title.

I can understand your excitement if this was Rock* showing off the new fluid control system for GTA4 on the PC or GTA5, whatever. But conceptually it leaves me cold.

I'm starting to get quite excited about this. The potential for an open world playground where I can clamber up anything I see is the main draw for me. I suppose it'll all come down to level design in the end though. If they make massive levels with lots of stuff it'll be awesome; if they make wee areas with a bunch of impassible high walls and massive drops it'll be crap.

the demo is out for PS3 now, at slightly under a gig. It's worth having a look at it too - it took me a while to get into the swing of things (pun intended). It's not like other video games, it's a lot more about spotting the quickest, easiest or more stylish way to jump, leap, dive and generally stay out of trouble. One of the few games out that actively encourage sneaking and non-violence as an option. Course, you can always kick some arse if you really want to :D

I'm not used to jumping on the PS3. The number of times I leapt to my death in the training grounds is unreal. Even wife was trying to give tips - "you really should have jumped over that chasm" etc.

So much so in fact that I went back and played the main game some more. Sadly, it just gets worse as it goes on, and I found it pretty much no fun at all. Will definitely be getting the TT level pack when it finally gets released though - honing your run to try and get in within the time limit, then scouting around to find better routes: very engrossing.
