Interesting things, the next version of the Xeon is being released to retail channels shortly and will be available from 2ghz. Why is this good? 45nm Quad Core, with 12mb just like Saladins CPU but with a price of just £150 (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-204-IN&groupid=701&catid=6&subcat=1074&name=Intel%20Xeon%20E5405%20%22LGA771%20Harpertown %22%202.00GHz%20(1333fsb)%2012mb-cache%20Processor%20-%20Retail)
Now that means that we can expect to see a desktop variant soon. Or, if you are feeling flush, you can get a dual CPU 771 MOBO for £180 and 2 of these quads. Granted you have to use FB DIMMS which are a touch more expensive but the net result is still an 8 core all singing all dancing platform for about £700 Which is a damn site cheaper than I can remember it being for anything similar in recent memory.
Regardless, if we get a new 12mb quad core for £150 we are laughing anyway as we know they clock well. This is a preemptive to the new 45nm Phenom that will be clocked much higher than the last incarnation and should take the fight back to Intel in a couple of areas.
