Right the problem is as follows:
I plan on connecting my ps3 to my pc monitor with my hdmi cable. The monitor has no built-in speakers though and nowhere to connect any speakers either. Its a samsung syncmaster T240. baah. what to do?

Buy a DAC, amplifier and speakers and connect via. the optical out. A pair of active digital monitors would suffice.
or
Buy an HDMI amp (with an HDMI loop-out for going to your TV) and some speakers.
...I think. I don't have a PS3 so I can't be sure. I'm basing all my guesses on looking at an image of the PS3's rear ports.

Sally hooked his up to his 5.1 system using the HDMI output but feeding that into his X-Fi via twin phono. Works well, what kind of soundcard do you have?

I had exactly the same issue when I bought my 2408WFP. What you need to do is hook your PS3 up to the HDMI port of the monitor, then hook the component lead sound bit into either a speaker system or what I do and put it into the Line-In port of a sound card, and play the sound through your PC. It works well, and there's no noticable lag, and the PS3 allows you to run the audio and video leads separately through the different ports.

sweet, thanks alot for that. My speakers are the Logitech X-540 (http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/speakers_audio/home_pc_speakers/devices/234&cl=gb,en) .. a reasonable set that didnt quite break the bank for me. I have a Hercules 5.1 soundcard. but i cant remeber the model and im not at my flat at the moment so i cant check it out. that a side after plugging the three leads for the speakers in i still have a free line-in port, microphone port and something that looks like a VGA port or summit i think. interesting.
I don't really have that much money so buying insane topnotch equipment is the last option indeed. my terminology when it comes to audio equipment is abysmal so links to photos/shops with the necessary cables/setups would be very much appreciated.
apparently i found the soundcard on the web. so i have this 5.1 Hercules soundcard (http://www.hercules.com/uk/Sound-Cards/bdd/p/53/gamesurround-muse-trade-5-1-dvd/). bought it like eighteen months ago to plug my drumkit into the line-in and use my pc speakers and wireless headphones.
Cheers,
Jussi

Your PS3 come with a cable from the component out to 3 phono connectors. A red white and yellow affair. The yellow is the picture (standard def) and the other two are your left and right channels. Using this analog out you can only get stereo but that is a good start. Get one of these:
Converter (http://www.microdirect.co.uk/ProductInfo.aspx?ProductID=19306&source=googleps)
And plug it into the 'line in' either directly into your sub (you should have an "Aux/MP3" input) or into your sound card.
Enjoy.
When upgrading your speaker package look for one that includes a digital optical in and you can enjoy HD surround from your PS3!
