Anyone want a game either tonight or Wednesday? I'm away from Thursday until late Sunday, and would quite like to get a 3rd game in this week.

Larry and I have updated the rules regarding the limit to the number of teams you may enter into the ladder. Can all participants please familiarize themselves with the new rules (link at the top of this thread).

Those rules are gay, and I amn't playing any more

Sorry, let me elaborate. I thought the point of the league was to attract a lot of players and thus have a nice base to run tournaments. As such, we have the three games a week limit, which means the casual players can keep up with the fanatics. If you let people play up to 9 games a week then Mr I-have-tons-of-free-time-and-I-love-this-game gets to rank up all his teams, while Mr I-have-a-full-time-job-and-am-new only has the time or inclination to play 3 games with 1 team. In a month's time the players will be... well, let me put it in terms of blood bowl: the casuals' team strength will be a 2 Strength guy throwing a block on a 2 Strength guy. The pros' team strength will be a 5 Strength guy throwing a block on a 2 Strength guy. Pros already have the advantage of more practice, giving them better teams too is just absurd. What new player is gonna want to play in that situation? You might as well just abolish the three-game-limit and let people play as many times as they want.

Sid
9th December 2008, 18:36
It's a maximum of 5 games per week, and a maximum of 3 games can be played with one team.

I had initially wanted to still keep the 3 games per week maximum across all teams, but Larry argued that providing the 5 games are spread out amongst a player's teams (hence the 3 games per team per week maximum), it doesn't affect anything other than perhaps allowing keener players to have a wider choice of several teams. I ended up agreeing with him - having the choice of 3 teams isn't really an advantage considering there's a maximum of 3 games per team per week, which means that it's likely that multi-team players will end up dividing their points among their teams and will skill-up at a lower rate to anyone else.

--Mogwai--
9th December 2008, 18:39
its 5 games a week, not 9.. deliberately chosen so noone can have more than one team playing the maximum 3 games per week - so long as you play 3/week, you will be amongst the stronger teams, and not at any disadvantage.

the leftover 2 games presumably will be spent on side projects, fun teams, or just all out starting afresh without having to completely resign a team that you may have put a fair bit of effort into and want to return to later!

5 games total over 3 teams allows (ideally) for newcomers to find games against teams that aren't several games and skills ahead, and should prevent situations where people cant get a game because their one and only team is too strong or too deadly.

EDIT: of course the rules of this fledgling league are subject to change - but as it stood, anyone joining us 2 weeks in would find it impossible to play a 'fair' game as most available opposition would be 6 games more advanced

But what's the point? If you only have one competitive team in the league, why bother having more? Why not just go play on fumbbl? Basically, pick a team you think you can win with but which is boring, or pick a team which is fun. Stop trying to bugger the rules so you can have it both ways. Or hell, put a poll up. Does anyone apart from you actually want to run more than one team? If there's even a third of the league want it then I'll withdraw all objections.

I thought the point of the league was to attract a lot of players and thus have a nice base to run tournaments. As such, we have the three games a week limit, which means the casual players can keep up with the fanatics.

the point of the league *is* to make it easy and attractive to join in and act as a base for any run tournaments.

If new people join or other teams are forced to retire, the league table needs to be populated at all team-strength levels, otherwise no new team will ever get anywhere, and it might as well be a 'last man standing' event. its not fun or attractive when you start a TR100 team and realise your only options are TR200 teams who were there from week 1, and its not fun when you are forced to play the same team week in week out.

anyone would only ever have one team in the 'top tier' of 3 games-per-week-every-week teams, and that is *unlikely* to be anyone with more than 1 team!

in the end the offical bloodbowl rules allow for it, there is no competitive advantage to be gained for any individual team or for any tournaments, and i don't see why it cant be trialed - if its grossly unfair or people are opposed to it on principle then sure we'll chop people down to 1 team.

maybe a poll would help, but i'd like a more detailed explanation of exactly why it would advantage people who played 5 games (max 3 with any one team) over people played 3 games with the same team every week

edit - i suppose a lot of this depends on what you view the 'league' as - the league itself is in my eyes not a competition, it has no end date and cannot be 'won' as it stands. it is merely a framework for arranging games within our group, as well as other far stricter cup tournaments, which each user would only ever enter 1 team into.

Sid

OK, after discussing this with everyone on MSN/Ventrilo tonight, we seem to have agreed on a compromise: the maximum number of games across all teams has been reduced from 5 to 4, with the maximum number of games per team staying at 3.

Please contact Mogwai, Sideshow, or myself if you feel the stated rules are unfair or ambiguous.

Cheers folks!

As my Skaven have been beaten into a bloody mush by the vast power of Orc and Chaos teams, I'm going to switch to a high elf team. For reference, I've played 2 games with Skaven this week, so can play a further 2 games with the high elf team this week. Aye?

Yep, just make sure that you play different opponents with the High Elf team.

Would GUGS not have some old BB veterns? We could try work a pause v gugs tournament or something. Even the addition of one or two players to our ladder would be ace.

(I'm gonna start writing down mini-match reports for my games. This is mostly an exercise in which I get to whine. These ones are a little hazy: it was a fortnight ago!)

Titania's Kiss - Week 1

Game 1
The only Wood Elf team in the league begins the season with 11 Line-elves and 3 re-rolls (and as a fan-favourite with FF 8 ). Game one is against club caveman, Captain_Caveman's Dwarves. First time I've played against the short-arses, and I spend it learning how to. He scores twice because I don't know how to halt his inexorable advance. I think I get a lucky equaliser near the end of the 2nd half, and so get a tie. My fans don't like that though, and I only make 20,000gp and lose a point of Fan Factor. Sometime in the game a Dwarf stomps on Thewinle's hand, and so he gains a niggling injury. Of course, he is also nominated as MVP.

Game 2
My next opponents: Red Star Bellend (gor's Chaos). Happy to play them as I think Chaos will be slow and bashy like the dwaves. Am horrified to see a seething mass of Beastmen (move 6, +1 str on a blitz). Thewinle misses the game. Gor knows what he's doing, and wins 2-1, but I don't lose anyone and rack up some SPP, so not a bad game for me.

Game 3
Final game of Week 1 is against Destroy Rock'n'Roll (Mogwai's Orks). Got battered in the first half, and went 2-0 down. Thewinle is once more in absentia. I think I get like 2 Blitzes in the 2nd half, and tie. Haergle gets a skill up, and gets +Ag!

I'm going to be showing Jamie The Man (Who Iain has met. And maybe Larry) the game shortly. He's a bit rusty, as it's been a few years, but I'll try and persuade him to join in.

Aaron/Iain: Have either of you talked to George about it?

Sideshow
19th December 2008, 14:44
George seems reluctant. Aaron reckons he's scared.. not sure I disagree :)
Just told Irish Neil about it, he seemed interested. Shall get onto Jon too, but he probably won't have time/inclination. Showed Weeble too, but he doesn't want to play. Charles and his friend Rob are supposedly very interested, but have time handicaps. Asked Chris, who will be game once he has an internet pc again.

the fumbbl site has this to say... so the results will upload as normal.

The +/- 40 STR Rule

The +/- STR rule is not enforced in League. You are still expected to play reasonably competitive matches in open play, however. The reason it is not enforced is because of the way some tourneys are set up, rather than an actual endorsement of unfair games.

however, people in this league are free to decline any and all challenges as it stands, so if playing a much stronger team seems like suicide (it usually is...) then folk can choose to find an easier match :)

i think TR +/-40 ish is a fair enough game but yeah i'd be wary of going above that - the only problem with ru+gingerprinz is they are horribly inactive!

i have a new TR100 lizardmen team you could batter, but theres a good few teams in the 110-140 range.... i hear sideshow is a man or two down for his next game :D

GingerPrinz

I don't think it does man, this is more of a ladder, which can be infinite in length, than a league (which Sideshow has been talking about setting up).

--Mogwai--
8th January 2009, 15:09
yeah the ladder is just a collection of all our teams playing casual games - theres no timeframe or winner or anything... we were waiting for enough players before setting up specific tournaments/seasons with set #s of games and dates

GingerPrinz

Same old same old, MSN me for a game today. Also I was wondering if, given the small number of players we're experiencing, we could scrap the rule that says you can't play vs the same player (not team) twice in one week. The only active ladder players are Larry, myself, Gor, Twonky, Pit, Aaron and Charles - this can make getting a game with my lower TR team pretty tricky as most ppl want to play their top team (as do I) - the only teams in the league with TRs low enough to not massacre my orcs in some kind of sick joke are Pit's skavens, Twonky's hobbits, and at a total push Larry's Lizardmen (25tr odd above me). Everyone else is inactive or isn't putting teams in the ladder. Someone needs to add Charles's necro team to the roster also.
