In theory, the things you're scared of are usually the most worthwhile.

Yeah, I'm sorry. Just another new topic about a newbie building their first computer unit, however, I'll try to be as brief as possible.

After months of saving up from long hours at work, weeks of selecting components, asking computer technical friends for their approval on my ideal specifications, I'm nearing the end of my dreadful yet carefully handled, troublesome journey of finally being able to start constructing my first, ever computer unit.

I'd like to share with the users of Pause Gaming my up-to-date specification list of components & I would appreciate greatly if any of you could perhaps take a thorough read & tell me what your thoughts, comments, opinions, ideas, tips, advice, even ratings(1), complaints, anecdotes, etc on what I have listed.

(1) The rating system used on this topic will be 1 to 5. 1 = lowest & 5 = highest

The kind of desktop system I'm trying to build is for general use & the occasional gaming, perhaps being able to attend LAN parties, & so on. Free from delays, stalls & lags.

The games I usually play / will play are Left 4 Dead, World of Warcraft, Battlefield 2, Enemy Territory, Diablo 2, Diablo 3, & other games.

I'd also like to future proof for a few years. My budget is around £1,000 but willing to stretch it to £1,5000 if needed. I don't want to over do / power my first build so won't be 'pimping' out my machine with lights & illumination & just achieve a fully functional machine.

I've used various websites as my sources of components, OverClockers UK being my main. I'll definitely look at other websites to find lower prices, if any.

Feel free to share any websites you feel / experience recommendable. Also, because I'm fairly new at this, if you disagree with any of my components or can suggest better, please do! I'm open to suggestions.

I've used the Spoiler function to add some brief specifications of each components without spamming too much.

Is it true that AMD works better with ATI & Intel with NVIDIA?

Or that AMD is well known for good quality quad processors while Intel is good for duo?

Surely the PSU I listed above is sufficient to power the components selected?

Thanks.

PS. Sorry I had to make two posts together, there was a character limit.

Hi, and welcome to the forum.

It's always good to hear that you've taken the choice to build your own computer. It's a right of passage that most of us have been through on the forum, and it's well worth the blood, sweat and tears :)

You've made a good choice of components there, and computing has never been cheaper - £1000 gets you much more than it ever has!

Could you tell us more about what you'd like to do with the PC - is it solely for gaming, are you happy overclocking your PC, or will you be into 3d rendering/folding/number crunching/anything else?

I think the main thing in building a PC is being happy with the components you choose, and make it suit you. It's like a well tailored suit, it fits you and you alone - it doesn't matter about what anyone else does.

As far as components go, there's a debate going on whether intel or AMD (http://forum.pausegaming.com/showthread.php?t=2253) make better processors - I think they're much the same TBH.
As for the PSU rating - it's worth investigating how much power (http://www.thermaltake.outervision.com/) each requires. Usually, you'll have to push to get above 800W, even on max power.

Could you give a quick price next to the components as well please?

Hello, thank you for the greeting & replying.

Could you tell us more about what you'd like to do with the PC - is it solely for gaming, are you happy overclocking your PC, or will you be into 3d rendering/folding/number crunching/anything else?

The desktop unit system will be used for general & gaming use.

I'm a student, studying Multimedia Computing: Web Development so I use applications such as Photoshop, Fireworks, Dreamweaver, Flash, & so on.

I also have an interest / hobby in photography so require a large amount of hard disk space to store my images.

Other uses will be general browsing online, watching movies / television (streaming), music, coursework (documentation, spreadsheets, etc), usually having multiple windows & applications opened at the same time.

Games I play are already listed above.

The games I usually play / will play are Left 4 Dead, World of Warcraft, Battlefield 2, Enemy Territory, Diablo 2, Diablo 3, & other games.

It's not solely for gaming, no.

I don't overclock my systems, not so fond of the idea. lol

Yeah, sure I'll add the prices to the components as well.

If you're going to be using programs such as Photoshop and other image editing software then presumably you'd be interested in getting as much monitor real-estate as possible, and the one you linked to seemed quite expensive. The 24" model is only a few pounds more here (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MO-020-DE&groupid=17&catid=510&subcat=). Also, I just thought i'd point out that the Dell you've chosen uses a TN Panel, so it's not exactly going to be wonderful with regards to colour accuracy and things like that. It might be worth looking into something that uses a VA panel or even IPS if you can afford those, they'll offer much higher image quality than any TN Panel would. This monitor (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MO-024-DE&groupid=17&catid=510&subcat=) would be an example of a VA panel Dell.

32 bit or 64 bit?

I think pretty much everyone agrees that there's no real reason to get the 32bit version anymore unless you're planing on using some ancient legacy dependant hardware. Although I could be wrong on this.

Edit: doesn't Vista need to be 64bit in order to make use of 4gigs of ram? If so you'd need to have the 64bit version in order to make any use of all that ram.

Here's a list of IPS panels. (http://www.pchardwarehelp.com/guides/s-ips-lcd-list.php) Overclockers UK has a few of the Hazro ones here (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/productlist.php?groupid=17&catid=1120&sortby=nameAsc&catid=1120&mfrid=441). They don't seem too badly priced. I've not heard of them before though.

to0 has a post about 64 bit computing here somewhere too :D

the 32 bit windows (all 32 bit OS's) have a memory limit of 3.2 gig. You can't access memory if you have more than that unless you have a 64 bit OS, which may include Linux if you're feeling brave...

Thanks for linking me to the 24" monitor & pointing out the TN Panel on the Dell, didn't notice. I'll definitely re-consider.

TN Panel? Twisted Nematic Panel?
VA? Vertical Alignment?
IPS? In-Plane Switching?

Ooh so many monitor types / differences. Choices Choices. :)

I think pretty much everyone agrees that there's no real reason to get the 32bit version anymore unless you're planing on using some ancient legacy dependant hardware. Although I could be wrong on this.

My original idea was to get the 64 bit to make use of the RAM but then someone mentioned to me that some applications / games may have trouble running on 64 bit, hence why I had doubts about my choice.

No no, most of my components / hardware is rather up-to-date, no "ancient legacy dependant" for me. :P

Will get getting new speakers for the new system, using my current Razor Tarantula keyboard & Razor Diamondback mouse, new webcam, & the components listed above are new / recent so should be able to handle 64 bit unless someone disagrees?

I had a look at those monitors you linked GigaFuzz. Quite a jump. Don't think I should spend so much on a monitor. Haha. Break my budget. :P 22" to 24" is sufficient size for me. :)

I'll have a look for that thread on 32 bit 64 bit by To0. Thanks.

Ok, I like the look of your build but I think you are more likely to get a good build out of intel if it is your first time. The Phenom II is new but the platform is old. I want one and am close to ordering one but I've played with lots of systems and would prefer "character" to outright performance for my own build. I'm not saying don't do it, but maybe don't discount intel. AMD+AMD works no better than Intel+AMD. Likewise Intel+Nvidia(MOBO) + AMD works just fine (what I'm running).

The rest of your component choice is very well researched, I wouldn't spend that amount on a mobo for the Phenom personally, unless you know it happens to be the best overclocker/has the exact feature set you need. Also the 260 is an odd choice as the 4870 is generally the same performance for less money.

Get the NZXT is you want to be different, get the 900 if you want a case that loads of other folk have.

Update.

Looking back at my previous specifications, I had to downgrade for various reasons.

This is actually my ORIGINAL specifications.

Which graphics card should I go for? Eek!

Please tell me what you think? It would be super helpful. Thanks!

Also, not sure about the Optical Drive. :)

If I forgot anything, or the links doesn't work / incorrect information, please tell me.

No idea if that backs up what To0 said, but given that To0 is (approx.) 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000, 000 times smarter than the rest of us combined, it probably does.
