Mark and I have been asked by the committee to run a CS tournament at the upcoming LAN. The emphasis will be on teamwork and communication - we'll be playing the same old game that we're used to, but in a match environment with more thought going towards tactics and team coordination. Most importantly, it'll be about having some fun with your mates!

Teams will consist of 3 players. This has been decided because 3 is kind of the smallest team size possible while still encouraging teamwork - teams of 2 could still slightly favour lone ranger fraghunting which is something we want to avoid, whereas a well organized team of 3 could have the potential of beating a more experienced, but less well organized team. Also, we don't feel that the size of our LAN would support teams greater in number than 3.

In an effort to balance the teams, and provide a more experienced leader figure for each team, there will be seeded 'more experienced players'. Everyone else will form themselves into pairs with a friend, and then the pair will be assigned a leader.

Teams will be assigned a Ventrilo channel for in-game communication and will hopefully be given a little free time before each game to go over some tactics and allow the less experienced players a little time to familiarize themselves.

The actual tournament will some form of Swiss pairings culminating in a final of the highest ranked 2 teams. Lower teams may also choose to fight out in a final match to decide between 3rd and 4th place etc. The exact structure will be decided at the LAN depending on the number of teams - it'll probably be 2-3 rounds with a final.

Maps are yet to be finalized, but they will probably be the smaller defusal maps such as de_dust and de_aztec - which are more suited to a 3v3 match. We're considering possibly including cs_office as an early round map for a bit of popular fun and variation on the defusal maps, but this isn't definite and will be decided later.

There will 12 rounds per half, each round being 1:45 long. Change side after the first half. Knifes to decide teams for first half. All 24 rounds must be played as the round count will be used to decide the swiss ranking. If a team leaves before the match is over, they will forfeit all of the reamining rounds. It is expected that each round will take just around 45-50 minutes.

We'll have to ask you to hold off pairing up with a buddy until the LAN as we don't know how many people are taking part yet, and thus we don't know how many captains we'll need - which obviously needs to be established first before people can start pairing up.

My apologizes if I've missed out something or got something wrong. We're happy to listen to suggestions or changes. This is just a rough plan at this stage.

Your thoughts!?

Can you make sure sv_alltalk 1 is set so that we can spam beautiful music at each other, Sid?

Cool, really enjoyed the 5v5 CS tourney organised a year or two back so this should be fun :-)

This just in: Hardware doesn't affect your l33t skillz! This shocking revelation brought to you by PhizzNews :-P

Surely your old rig could play CS Phizz? I mean I know you've been striving to run the crappest rig at Pause but the only way your hardware could be hampering you wrt to playing CS is if you were trying to run it on a hamster-wheel powered 486

It still struggled to be stable running anything that required use of the gfx card for the last half a year or so.

I could be that noob! Yeah I have about 4 hours experience with CS:S.

Looking forwrd to the tourney even if I get completely mauled. And what does Pro-Mod mean? Having the Terrorists run around in Hello Kitty suits cause you've swapped the skins? Or am I horribly wrong?

And what does Pro-Mod mean?
I'm not too sure - I've never heard of it. The tournament is just going to be standard CS, though.

But I quite like the idea of:

CS pro mod is still very buggy. The new release is due soon and should be more stable. The community has been waiting a very long time for it, so long infact, that all pro mod servers are dead and most of the hype has faded. It could be a good compromise for tournament play if they eventually get it right.

Lol, I feel Lewis' reference was to the general society in-jokes about "pro-mod" - since the guy generally dislikes CS I doubt he was aware there was an actual Pro Mod! Tbh neither was I...I've gotta ask wtf the point would be? I mean I'd imagine the jist of the mod is "make source like 1.6" to which my question would be "why not just play 1.6?". Feel free to enlighten me

lol, I didn't read into it, just assumed lewis had heard about it on the grape vine.

The pro mod project was a lot more relevant 2-3 years ago when it was first announced. As I mentioned earlier it has lost most of its hype with constant delays and the community has moved on.

The premise was to bring the best parts of source and 1.6 together in one game, since valve were (at the time regarded as) so inept at doing it in the first place. Source was recognised as a disastrous successor by the big clans and the switch was put off for as long as possible in the hope valve would patch it all better. It reached the point where high skill clans getting sponsored by Intel and getting dual core's supplied for free, were playing a generation old game that obviously couldn't offer any benefit as a promotional tool. Clans would play source to keep the sponsor happy while playing 1.6 for the real competitive gameplay. Piece that together with other big clan game releases, big LAN tournaments dropping 1.6 for shiny new things and graphics savvy consumers, source eventually took over as the CS. But it never reached the competitive level of 1.6, mainly down to the gameplay decisions by valve. I thought this quote from a CSP developer pretty much summed up the frustrations in the clan community a few years ago:

When it comes to mapping, our main focus is bringing the core of what made the original map so great into its CSP counterpart. Mike, for example, made de_nuke unit for unit the same as its 1.6 version, while maintaining all the spam spots in the previous edition, and the original sound quirks. Because such elements as excessive obstacles (such as barrels), looping soundscapes, and insanely computer-taxing 3D skyboxes, are unnecessary for competitive play, we have kept them out of CSP map versions. We've stuck to a clean, simple approach.

Ah, it's been a while, so my skills are a little rusty, but I can dig out the auto-shotty again and relive the glory days of having 12-year-old Americans shout "AUTO SHOTGUNS ARE FOR GAYZZZ" down their mics at me.

Not sure how good our American accents are, but the rest sounds like a typical LAN for us. :p

craig and i were hoping for more of a response to this, and with some of the more experienced players that we were hoping to lead teams not attending anymore, we think it'd be best to postpone this until next LAN.

Stay frosty.

Just have some large-ish team games instead?
