Mark and I have been asked by the committee to run a CS tournament at the upcoming LAN. The emphasis will be on teamwork and communication - we'll be playing the same old game that we're used to, but in a match environment with more thought going towards tactics and team coordination. Most importantly, it'll be about having some fun with your mates!
Teams will consist of 3 players. This has been decided because 3 is kind of the smallest team size possible while still encouraging teamwork - teams of 2 could still slightly favour lone ranger fraghunting which is something we want to avoid, whereas a well organized team of 3 could have the potential of beating a more experienced, but less well organized team. Also, we don't feel that the size of our LAN would support teams greater in number than 3.
In an effort to balance the teams, and provide a more experienced leader figure for each team, there will be seeded 'more experienced players'. Everyone else will form themselves into pairs with a friend, and then the pair will be assigned a leader.
Teams will be assigned a Ventrilo channel for in-game communication and will hopefully be given a little free time before each game to go over some tactics and allow the less experienced players a little time to familiarize themselves.
The actual tournament will some form of Swiss pairings culminating in a final of the highest ranked 2 teams. Lower teams may also choose to fight out in a final match to decide between 3rd and 4th place etc. The exact structure will be decided at the LAN depending on the number of teams - it'll probably be 2-3 rounds with a final.
Maps are yet to be finalized, but they will probably be the smaller defusal maps such as de_dust and de_aztec - which are more suited to a 3v3 match. We're considering possibly including cs_office as an early round map for a bit of popular fun and variation on the defusal maps, but this isn't definite and will be decided later.
There will 12 rounds per half, each round being 1:45 long. Change side after the first half. Knifes to decide teams for first half. All 24 rounds must be played as the round count will be used to decide the swiss ranking. If a team leaves before the match is over, they will forfeit all of the reamining rounds. It is expected that each round will take just around 45-50 minutes.
We'll have to ask you to hold off pairing up with a buddy until the LAN as we don't know how many people are taking part yet, and thus we don't know how many captains we'll need - which obviously needs to be established first before people can start pairing up.
My apologizes if I've missed out something or got something wrong. We're happy to listen to suggestions or changes. This is just a rough plan at this stage.
Your thoughts!?
