After the latest firefox update, 3.0.8, the cpu usage on my laptop will randomly jump upto 100% with ff running and stay there til i close the program.

It doesnt always happen as soon as ff is opened, usually its been running for a few minutes, but occasionally has done it instantly.

It doesnt seem to be connected with combinations of programs running, it happens if im running afew programs, and when iv only got ff open.

Doesnt seem to be influenced by the number of tabs/specific sites, happens with one or multiple tabs open, even one tab sat at google homepage did it one time.

Full virus scan with avast on max sensitiviy and adaware full scan, found nothing and problem still happens.

Laptop is running vista home premium, and does have issues with afew programs since i put that on,msn, catalyst control centre, steam,... so its entirely possible its just my laptop playing up.

I had a quick look around but couldnt find anything about others having this problem. Anyone else having issues?
Not sure theres much i can do but live with it till the next update and hope it gets fixed.

I've heard mixed reports of CPU spiking from the last few editions of firefox tbh. I'm thinking of switching to the google browser until they sort it out. Odd that you've been having issues with MSN, CCC and Steam as well tho... Are they similar/the same issue? Are they all at the latest version? Have u tried uninstalling FF and reinstalling latest version standalone rather than updating?

Only like most of the FF base for the past 2+ years!
;)

Use Process Explorer & look at the FF process'
threads, I'll bet you find
JPEG_FDCT_ISLOW eating all your CPU.

I was meaning the other programs werent working anyway, this install / exact setup of vista on my laptop is pretty shit, needs a reinstall but iv been putting it off till the end of the year incase it all goes tits up.

End of the year as in uni year? Can't see any logical reason why you would be waiting til the end of 09 unless it was so you could get drunk on NYE to console yourself if it "goes tits up". Ultimately tho, formatting and reinstalling is tough to get to go very badly wrong.

Unless of course you forget to dl your mobo/network drivers beforehand and are left webless and forced to trek to uni to dl them!

yeh i was meaning uni year, i use my laptop in most of my lectures, so if somehting did go wrong itd be pretty annoying. The stuff that hasnt bin workin wasnt really needed anyway, as anyone who saw me attempting to use it to game with at the final lan of last (academic)year will understand. Plus i havnt had that many free weekends to spend dicking about with my laptop.

I agree with Thanatos about waiting until the end of a Uni year.

I would regard myself as an expert computer user and I have plenty of experience with formatting and installing an operating system (I used to do a 'monthly format' for years!); however, even I decided that I couldn't risk a reinstall so close to the end of my final year. A reinstall always carries the risk of forgetting to back something up, or finding yourself unable to configure the install to the way it was before.

Think iv got it tracked down abit further. Seems to be only after iv had my hotmail inbox open in a firefox window. odd

Firefox is clearly allergic to M$, even hotmail causes it to break out in a crash. :D
