A fresh introductions thread for a fresh year
If you're one of our new members this is a great place to start posting on the forums. Introduce yourself and get to know the other members before the first LAN. Let's hear what games you're into and what games you hate. Post a photo of yourself, if you like so that people can recognize you at the events.
----------
I'll start:
My name is Craig and my favourites games are Counter-Strike, Dawn of War and BF2.
I just graduated and I'm now working full-time, so I don't do much gaming anymore and I'm not sure how many LANs I'll be at this year, but I'll hopefully try to make one or two.

I'm Peter, I'm the guy that will be poking around with any dead/dying/interesting/new hardware at the LAN. I'm also the biggest forum whore so likely I'll be the first to reply to virtually everything because I have no life. :)
I'm a huge Sim nut and love nothing more than spending a couple of hours pounding round the tarmac of Europe in whatever the current best sim is. Also love first person shooters and a growing love for RTS games (all Sideshows fault).
Working in Edinburgh but try to attend as many LANs as I can because nothing beats lanning.

I'm Kenny, I'm the guy who'll be troubleshooting your hardware issues while Peter's asleep, and I also work for the Uni IT, so if you have any Uni related problems I might be able to help, so give me a shout.
Mainly an FPS fan for multiplayer, but I'll give anything a go if it's fun. I'll probably be at most lans, provided I'm not being lazy.

I'm Phil, the token EVE player. You'll probably see me at most LANs and if you come really early on the second day I'll probably one of the few, the brave and the stinky (although not so much these days thanks to QM showers. \o/) who was kipping over.
I'll play most of the games everyone else does and you can almost be certain to see me online if you need simple questions answered, although Neo and To0 are your best bet tbh.

I'm Henry, I enjoy FPS games. Last LAN I was at I was the one kicking everyone's ass at Crysis Wars :)
Korin
17th September 2009, 11:48
I'm Korin. I wear Nice Boots and eyeliner, and my laptop can barely handle games beyond Counter-Strike, TFC and Diablo 2. I can also rarely remember names.
I should really read this forum more often.

Hello, I'm Lewis, I am a scientist and I look a bit like this (but usually a little less formal):
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3116/3096848420_93cf58cddb.jpg
I'm doing a PhD in Cell Engineering and spend most of my evenings playing games and/or listening to some hefty bass frequencies. I also enjoy comics, longboarding, RPGs and reading.
I play pretty much anything apart from sport/racing games. I especially enjoy games which involve exploring or have co-op elements.
I suffer the shame of having a lv. 80 WoW character. I am also a sarcastic twat.

I'm Brian. I really like RTS's but occasionally play shooters too. I play all sorts of games including consoles/hand-helds and non-computery games such as tabletop RPGs, wargames, cardgames and boardgames. If you like other types of gaming too, you will often see me at GUGS of a Tuesday and/or Saturday. There's not a game I would not try. I even tried the _horror_ that is A New Zero.
I too suffer from playing WoW occasionally.

I'm Dave. I work as a game tester and am what you would label an "active web member" of the society, although now Peter (To0) hooked me up with a nice rig guide I may be appearing at more LANs should they be rawkin.
If you are interested in becoming a game tester give me a shout, although I guess it's out of the picture for most students as it's 8-5, Mon-Fri (maybe holidays?). If you speak a non-English native language the hours can be quite flexible.
Plug over, since it seems like the thing all the cool kids are doing, I quit WoW about 5 months ago because Blizzard made it lame. No disrespect to those still suckling - fil your boots - but it's not the game it used to be. Recently I have discovered EVERY GAME EVER (well, Fallout 3, Portal and TF2... but I do have to test whatever 8-5 Mon-Fri) and am in somewhat of a gamegasm.
PS. I am taller, younger and more ginger than DAve

Hey Arran, welcome to Pause! I'm sure there will be lots of new members, but right now they're probably just out enjoying fresher's week a little too much to sign up for the forums! :P What halls are you staying in?

I'm Xander, and I'm a sort-of-new member. I'll be filling the role of token Final Fantasy fanboy. As a console gamer, the only multiplayer PC stuff I currently have is Dungeon Keeper 2, Worms Armageddon, Team Fortress 2, and GoldenEye Source.
On the other hand, I'm a proud owner of both a Nintendo DS Lite (nane ae this DSi kak) and a PSP-3000 (nane ae this PSP Go! kak). So I'll definitely maybe be about at the portable events. I don't have any of my home consoles with me, though, because I didn't bring a TV either.
I am presently studying for a BSc in Mathematics and Psychology, and I reside in the student apartments at Hillhead. You'll find me on Facebook and Twitter (as xandermac05), if you're into that...

21st September 2009, 00:29
Hey all, I'm Chris and I'm a new(ish) member but not a Fresher. I'm finishing the first year of my physics PhD and came along to last years Freshers' LAN, but was promptly overwhelmed by the first year workload and didn't have time for too many other things, and unfortunately gaming fell by the wayside. All the compulsory first year crap's out of the way now so I have more time on my hands, and intend to populate Steam with as many FPS as I can afford.
I'm neither a console nor a portable gamer, but plan on getting hold of Final Fantasy 13 if it ever gets completed, and like I mentioned above I prefer FPS with a bit of RTS on the side provided none of them are set during World War II. It's been done to death and is just dull now.
I like reading both novels and comic books, provided there are no superheroes in them, as well as RPGs and I'm currently getting back into wargaming after a five year hiatus.
I prefer using laptops these days since they're not colossal pains in the arse to haul into LANs, although the one I'm using right now is a bit sub-par - the GeForce 8400M just doesn't quite cut it these days - so I'll be the guy running Vista which is skinned to look like Windows 2000, and after Christmas I'll explore the best form of debt I can get into in order to get a new rig. Btw, if anyone has any suggestions on a high spec'd laptop, I'm open to them. Money's not a huge issue.
Anyway, that's my two cents. Looking forward to the first LAN.

I'm the current president and in the first year of my bioelectronics PhD. Those of you that run Steam remember to add one of the committee to your friends list so we can get you onto the Pausegaming Steam group. We shall hopefully be getting some online games arranged soon! In fact......anybody up for some CoD4 tonight? It's been awhile. I'll put up a post.

Hello! I am a fresher person, hooray.
I am Daniel, studying Computer Science along with Maths and Electronics. I am mostly a PC gamer, but sometimes Xbox too. I play TF2 the most but sometimes break out Rock Band and a bunch of other things. Also been playing Scribblenauts on the DS now and then. Summoning Cthulhu to rescue a cat from a tree is always fun.

Welcome to all our new members for 2009/10!
Great to see some CSS and TF2 getting mentioned :)
My names Larry, I'm the OCM for this year, currently studying Marketing at Caledonian. Games-wise its all about Blood Bowl and CS: S lately. I've got to echo the recommendation for new members to get onto our Steam community group, by far the easiest way to get some gaming on the go.

I mainly play the xbox 360 but I also enjoy strategy games for the pc, like dawn of war and age of empires. I am a second year aero engineer. I currently don't have the internet in my flat...sigh, so I am currently sitting in the library. I will hopefully get it sorted out so I can post more often. Hope to see you guys soon.

6th November 2009, 15:11
I thought I should probably do one of these. I'm not technically new to the society- I first joined GUNS when I was a fresher back in 2005, but never actually got around to attending any events. I worked pretty much every Saturday and Sunday while I was an undergrad and could never quite make my holidays line up with a LAN. Anyway, I'm doing a Masters now and have more free time at the weekends so I'm hoping to make it along to more events this time round. I went to the console LAN last month, and had grand plans to go to the PC event but that was knackered by my car's brakes needing to be rebuilt.
I'm a PC gamer primarily- TF2, L4D and Dawn of War are the games I play most. I also own an xbox, but it mainly gets used for single player stuff and very rarely for online games. So, with that written, I'm now going to get stuck into Dragon Age. Mmmm, Bioware. :)
(By the way, any chance of an invite into the Steam group? My SteamID is on my profile.) (Done - Giga)

For to look! (http://img11.imageshack.us/img11/4122/pict3585y.jpg) Not necessarilly the best pickur since the lower half of my face int even in it, but live with the gun hand!
I have XBox 3sixtyoh, PS2, and then some stuff that is older. I loves the action adventure stuff, Devil May Cry, Prince of Persia, Chaos Legion (totally underated thing that it is), things like that. Dynasty Warriors too, which contains a similar amount of killing things with pointy sticks.
Pretty into RPGs too, Final Fantasy, Elder Scrolls. Fable, until I get bored of everyone laughing at my outfits...
Metal Gear Solid is a barrel full of awesome.
And I play other things, about the places. Dead or Alive and Soul Calibur are never not fun :p

yeah u got that right hex.. its computer rpg's..its isometric rpg's most of them developed on bioware's infinity engine... old school? damn man u make me sound old... seeing that i just turned 21 i guess i should feel flattered
im sure u all know dragon age origins.. well i played baldur's gate 2 which dragon age was supposed to be the successor to.. there's the horribly broken but wonderful planescape torment... icewind dale 2... arcanum... temple of elemental evil... most of them use the Dungeons&Dragons rulesets... stuff like 2d4 weapons and saving throws against spells and traps... its a mindfcuk and takes a while to get into but is fun when you get what they all mean.. oh also the original fallouts 1 & 2.. oh also neverwinter nights..nwn2 sucked balls though
there are a few exceptions though things like vampire masquerade... which is technically not a crpg... but was a pc only release... all these are old games which i love and wish other people play more of... who knows i might bring some of u all over to the darkside
Captain_Caveman
24th February 2010, 15:52
Bit late for that. Most of us have already done balders gate/fallout/diablo 2 etc for more hours than we really care to admit so no attracting us to the dark side, we already hiding in its shadows.

Hi, I'm Danny, I'm in second year studying economics, and I've put this off since starting uni for some reason or other.
I'm mostly a pc gamer, and I have put way too much time into my Guild Wars, World of Warcraft and CS vices. I also play halo 3 fairly regularly, so I'll be coming to the console LANs for sure.
I have a bit of an issue in that due to an ineffective processor fan, my computer is literally open at both sides with a full sized desk fan pointing into it, but if I find a way to remedy that and make my pc a bit more portable, I will definitely come along to the pc LANs as well.
My steam login is applejoint, if anyone wants to play some CS:S at some point.

Yo!!!!! A bit late in finding this society but, emm I'm sarah and I'm in my first year of a German degree at the moment. Used to do quite a lot of pc gaming back when i had the joyous luxury of a pc, stuff like TF2, L4D, Thief games, Stalker etc. But now I'm stuck with a laptop running Linux, so sadly I only have such great titles as "nibbles" and "4 in a row" unless I can be arsed sorting out wine. Aside from that I've got an xbox which I only have a few games for (Fable 2, Saints Row 2, Silent Hill: Homecoming and Beautiful Katamari, but should be borrowing Mass Effect at some point soon). Also have a ps2, favourite games on that are Shadow of the Colossus, the Silent Hill games, Godhand, Disgaea 2, and last but not least the total work of art that is APE ESCAPE. Never played multiplayer games all that much cause I'm a bit shite with people, but might as well give it a go eh? Probably will only end up going to the console LANs atm due to the lack of PC, but plans of building one when I have enough money are well on their way.
But what you really ought to know is MY FAVRIT GAME IZ PEGGLE COZ ITS RELY GUD N THAT N U GET TO BE A UNICORM GUY AT THE START ITS KL (:

Not really. We occasionally organise a TF2 night where we'll hop on and find a suitable server (we've used the Hampshire Heavies ones a lot in the past), but not many of us play frequently.

I like the HH servers because it makes me feel as though I am spectacular at TF2 when I go on "normal" servers.

HH servers are pretty good, plenty of low/mid level comp players frequent there and they have a vote map and crit system in place.
However I'm usually playing at the PCG server (85.236.100.18:27115). It's bit of a shit server to be honest, frequent server crashes, fairly dumb players and an almost entirely abysmal map rotation, which is rarely changed as the only admins are the journalists who are far too busy, although I think there is one more guy who as soon as he was made an admin disappeared. But that's where all my friends play so I put up with it. If none of them are online I'll go to a HH server.

Cheers dude!
Hey! It's the summer and a rather strange time for joining but I came across the link on the Glasgow Uni Societies list and thought I could use some fellow gamers to game with.

Nah, welcome to the forums. Feel free to add us on Steam if you want to get games on the go. (the little steam icon under the post count I think)

Hi,
I am a new member of this site. I know someone who loves gaming - so i am looking for events that they can perhaps get involved in. I once attended Glasgow Uni many years ago but I am not currently attending Uni and dont know anyone who is.
To attend the LAN events at the QMU do you need to be a Glasgow Uni Student or can visitors also attend?
I think he would really enjoy participating - seems to be a lack of gaming events on the go and this looks ideal.
Could someone please let me know?
Thanks a lot
Tracy

Get him to sign up on the forum, visitors are welcome but it's always good to get introduced to this bunch without having to smell them first.

You are so mean, To0.
Most of us smell just fine, there's no need to tar us all with the brush of Phizz.

How old is he?
Good point, visitors are welcome so long as they're over the drinking age - we hold events in the QMU and hence folk need to be 18+ to attend. Not to mention the fact that the language at our events is less than family friendly...

I think the people in general are less than family friendly, not just the language. ;)

We're not that scary. Unless he uses IE, in which case, he should probably run to the hills.

Thanks everyone for your kind responses - much appreciated and cheers for the e-mail Korin. (my flat mate is 31 by the way - is there an age limit as i appreciate this is getting on a bit...)
I will let him know about the forum here and keep my eyes open for future events.
Much obliged.
