Holding it apparently weakens the signal strength. Guess they should have handled it more during testing?
I was thinking of upgrading my phone to something a bit more modern. You know, something without an attached cord.
I was thinking of yer old iphone which I hear is mostly for apple fanboys and sellouts, or yer HTC Desire which I hear is mostly for android fanboys and sellouts, or yer Nokia X16 which I hear is awright and has like 16gb memory and free proper sat nav n stuff, but limited apps - therfor mostly being suitable for nokia fanboys and sellouts.
I think the Nokia N8 (http://www.nokia.co.uk/find-products/all-phones/nokia-n8) will give iphone 4 a run for its money. It even has HDMI output and 12 megapixel camera. But it's not out yet. Soon though...
Soon... soon, I shall have a wireless telephone. And the world shall fear my technoligifical accomplishments!

I don't know why phone manufacturers keep running into this problem. It was an issue for a few of the 3G and 3GS handsets too, not to mention the Nexus One as well. At least the problem seems to be mitigated if you get a bumper case for the iphone 4.
Desire is good, think Nexus 1 but fixed.
The nokia will give nothing a run for it's money till it drops Symbian. Which it is going to do but hasn't yet.
I have a hero, it's good to know I carry a hero in my pocket.

HTC Desire cannot just be for fanboys, as I upgraded to it from my old Nokia 1110 after looking at a couple (http://www.techradar.com/news/phone-and-communications/mobile-phones/15-best-mobile-phones-in-the-world-today-645440?artc_pg=20) of things (http://www.techradar.com/reviews/phones/mobile-phones/htc-desire-679515/review).
They just updated that first link this morning, the Desire was number 1 before.
Personally, even with my extra-double-plus size Troll hands/fingers, I have found the touchscreen on the Desire incredibly pleasant to use, and despite my suggestion that you buy a cleaning cloth thingy, the screen doesn't really get that bad, I'm just a tad protective of it because it's new and shiny.
The camera on it is, also, really quite (http://picasaweb.google.com/115325328220492516224/StronachullinViews?feat=directlink) good (http://picasaweb.google.com/115325328220492516224/StronachullinAnimals?feat=directlink).
In short.
Buy HTC Desire or Troll Smash.

I got the Desire's little brother, the Legend (basically Hero 2), and have been pretty happy with it. Android's even slicker than I expected, and for the most part HTC Sense is quite nice.

Following the typically arrogant response from Steve Jobs here (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/8761240.stm), I posted a mildly humorous (to me) tweet on the issue.

Suddenly I notice a new email...

I fear I have been classed as a dissenter, and will soon be shot.
Pray for me, friends!

Tbh I'd looked at those links earlier in the week. iphone 4 had been #1 since at least wednesday (day of launch). HTC Desire had been one of my "top of the list" but had a play on the camera today and thought "meh..." - it's adequate but not jaw-droppingly good. the screen doesnt do as well in bright outdoor light as it's wee brother the Legend.
I might wait and see what the N8 is like (yeah, even though it's not a droid or mac-daddy).
... I used to think a symbian was a sexual machine for pleesurising the ladies. True story. May actually even be a true story.
None of the cameras are any good tbh. Last good camera phone thing I had was the N73. mEH

My bad, I was basing my "this morning" thing on the article updated time, which was less than half an hour before when I was writing the post.

Personally I've not noticed any real problem with it outside, although in very bright sunshine I did turn the screen brightness up a notch to compensate.
I'm not sure what kind of high-expectations you had for the camera, but for me it was rather jaw dropping.

I always liked the nokia cameras. Like many of the last couple of year's worth of nokia's the n8 will have a carl zeiss lens. You will get pictures like this (http://samples.republicpublishi.netdna-cdn.com/Nokia-N8-sample-6.jpg). Hopefully. click the image and see the awesome clarity and detail.
So, I'm not saying the HTC camera is bad, it's just I'd expect the leading phones to be awesometastic in every way. HTC is awesome at interbots and droid apps, Nokia not so good at these, and even the n8 seems to have a wee bit laggy browser (according to first reports, at least not as good as HTC Desire). Nokia seem to be winning the camera war though.

I'd far rather have my phone be good at phone things + smartphone extras, and have a decently good camera, then if I really feel the need for hyper-sharp images (which I don't see the need for unless you're a professional / serious hobbyist) buy a dedicated camera.
Same way I wouldn't expect a motherboards built in video adapter to be a proper graphics card.

This.
The iphone and HTC cameras _are_ bad.
If you look at the picture you linked it is nice and sharp and is impressively highres. But I'd prefer a 5mp and better filtering. The way it handles contrast and dithering is appauling and makes shots at that size pointless. Look at the horrible artifacts that cover that picture at 1:1 zoom. It just means that you'll never get to use the full 12mp. A phone camera will never be a replacement to even a compact camera and for that reason I'll always look to make sure my phone can take video but not worry about the quality.

HDMI output on N8. Noice. I wanna see one in the flesh. I think it's now between HTC Desire and Nokia N8 for me.
@ToO: luvin' the new sig. ;P
After being told that the new Firmware was unlikely to reach my phone before the end of July I decided to take the plunge and see how the dev scene is for the andriod roms.
If you are a tech geek then it is 7th Heaven. My phone now does everything it should have been able to do on release, faster. There are issues overclocking a phone, the already not so spectacular battery life is now stretched even more but as it now uses less CPU (undervolted and underclocked) when idle it lasts longer when you aren't using it... sounds a bit backward but true.
Anyway, if you have a desire, evo, hero or just about any other Android device head over to XDA Developers and see what they can do for you!
Once there are as many good apps for Android as there are for the iPhone, I'll get the best HTC device going. Until then, I'll stick to the iPhone. It's pretty flawless (unless you want to take photos on your phone - wtf?) and whenever a company wants to develop new smartphone software - it's the iPhone they support first.
You should really jailbreak the phone first, though, otherwise it's not that great.
I'd like to see what apps you feel are missing for the android market. I had a shot on the iphone and ipod touch and yes there are more apps but the essential ones (replacement message, browser, rss feeds etc) are present.

definitely the ones you pay £4 for and all they do is make your iphone make fart noises, i think they're kind of really important.
