Subject says it all really.
If you vote "No" you will make me sad :(
Edit: In fact if you vote "No", then you better post here as to why.

Unless it is alot of work in which case I see no reason why not. Just expect Fyndir to be the one to get the most use out of it

There is no job too big for the hulking intellectual extremity that is Sideshow.

I'm not really for or against a shout box (yet). Could whoever has voted no post their reasons?
N.B. It's not a lot of work to add it, depending on how I do it. The one on my page is just a text file that a script can write to, which gets SSI'd into the page when it loads. THis is easy. I could try and make it store the shouts in one of our database (it could even be stored as a thread in the forum). This would be more work, but also more fun :) I'll think about it more if I'm going to do it. So - reasons!

I can't really see the point in one. An anonymous way to add text of your choice to the website’s homepage – seems just like a tool that would get exploited. What's wrong with the forum?

Really don't see how it would be "exploited". Most of us are mature enough not to post shit. And I doubt the GUNS homepage attracts many people just out for a laugh. And even if this is the case, Sideshow or someone similar can lightly admin it. Removing any erroneous posts.
But for a proper positive reason how about this.
Last year when I first joined GUNS, the forums daunted me a little bit. Lots of people I didnt know etc. In my opinion, a shoutbox is less scary for a new person to say "hello" to all of us.
Not proof or anything, but we have a newly registered guy on the forums... and I havent seen him make a post yet.
The reason Sideshow is making and has made these changes to the frontpage so that it seems more active and accessible.
Go on to a lot of societies homepages and you wouldn't know whether they were still going or not; just a shitty E-Mail address or sometimes just a mobile number.
And for the secondary non-important reason. Since some of us check the forums quite regularly it could be a good way of perhaps saying "Pool tonight at the QM?" Without having to make another post on the forums or send 6 PMS out to everyone.
So pop.

Having broke sideshow's shoutbox on snakebomb.com, I can laugh about it here. There are probably exploits just waiting to be explored, but it might be useful to have it on the front page, and see where it goes.
Can you add an RSS feed or something to the shoutbox? If anyone is administering it, then it would be useful to get the spam shut out quickly.

You broke the very first version, that I had only just written, and that lasted as long as it took me to filter <, > and &. Security isn't an issue.

I wasn't really talking about spam abuse - that's taken for granted and it's accepted that it can be administered easily.
Security isn't an issue.
Security is always an issue on the web. If it's well written it could be fine. If not, shoutboxes are very good for insertion attacks and general fucking around with the page layout.

Big majority Pro, so I've added one on a trial basis. Check it out, shout something!

Nice.
Additional: good idea to separate the contact and about pages in the header. Cheers.

CSS is still a little fucked up - check out the date on the news post.
Splitting contact and about was actually a kluge to fix a problem that would occur if the a pop-up menu extended past the bottom of the navigation section, toward the shoutbox.
Sorry, I mean: yes, thanks, I'm a pro.

You mean the timestamp not showing? It'll be easy enough to fix :)
While I'm here, is the picture of the day meant to be random? It's been the same for the past few days.

it's not not-displaying - it's at the bottom of the post. And yes, I had noticed the PotD. Oh look, no boss near me - I'll fix it now :)

RE: the date (of the post) positioning problem on the index page.
It displays fine in IE, which is annoying, but not in Firefox.
Would it be better to surround the date and the h1 title in a span (or a div) and give that whole section the css styling. In this way, joining the two of them up as one line?
If not, ignore this, I'm a css n00b in more ways than one.
Oh, also. The announce thing on the index page isn't displaying more than one item. Dispite the items=4 request :)
Damn, only 8 hours till BF2.

/me does happy dance.
There's still an odd issue with a pound sign on the bottom of the page. I'll try and fix that, along with the intregration issue today.
