Yeah, Exuus and myself have been talking about this. Are we doing it this year? We're definately up for it. What's the score boss? :)

Just got an email from the SRC today. We've got a place at the freshers fair on the Wed 14th and Thurs 15th of September. More information will be available later this month (yeah, the SRC are shit. Again.)
I was just going to bring a laptop along and play some demos. HL2 demos, that london thing, RvB, all the usual sorts of things. It would really help to have enthusiastic people at hand to talk to the freshers.
The main thing is whatever happens, we need to get the email addresses and names of the freshers. We couldn't read the names of most of them last year and it all want a little pear-shaped.
The main bonus now is we have a working website and forums up and running. Printing this information off and giving it to the freshers so they can contact us would be a good idea. I can print some business cards and fliers and things fairly easily.
Oh, and we need to sort out minor things like a committee and a bank account. Fancy coming to the pub and discussing it :)
Jims from about 8 on Wednesday.

I want to be involved, however, 8 at the pub maybe a little difficult. I will be back today but I'm not sure how much time I will have.

Yeah, i might be able to help out with that aswell. was feeling sick, so didnt make the meeting, sorry.
I have done the FF before for the QM (so im a veteran lol). I am prepared to be bored sh*tless for extended periods of time and have very sore feet (thats what im getting paid for at the moment). also i will bring penny sweets, since (as with any other situation) sweets are the way to score.
I also recomend stickers (if you know any way of getting some printed, dAve), and if you know any way of getting hold of free demo disks that would be bonus, obv (is it legal to just print them? could go to a bulk cd place). Postcards are the way forward, btw.
i would offer the services of my computer, but i dont think it would be an excellent promotional tool (theyd be like 'WTF is that piece of sh*t?! If thats the kinda crap youre using im never coming!').

THanks for the offer of the stall, chaps.
It's literally the more the better, and having enthusiastic people on the stall to meet the freshers is a great way to recruit.

YAY!

I never thought of stickers. I could print a bunch out with buy-over-the-counter stickers. THat would be cool.
Don't know about demo-disks. Mass-producing them would be easy enough & relatively cheap. Could put some demos of the previous lans on them too.
Postcards are a good idea as well. They would be more expensive to print (unless you know of anywhere cheap?)

Could ask the SRC/QM where they get theirs, i think our problem will probly be that we're gonna be looking for a relatively small batch size (which may make it less economic). But on the other hand, if you dont ask, you dont get.
If you need cds/dvds printed, my machine is *just about* capable of that, lol. we'll need some kinda packaging for them. is there in-game videos from the LAN? that would be awsome.
What dates is it on, btw?
for business cards, there is Mailboxes (which probly aint the cheapest place, but is nice and convenient).
PS: if you do get postcards, you could just get a whole load and then keep putting them in the unions during termtime. Obviously a good idea to get quality (copyright-free?) images and good, humourous captions.

THinking about this more: a CD combined with business card would be better.
A branded GUNS cd with printed label (website address, logo, contact nos etc.) with actual useful stuff in there. Game demos, some demos / maps perhaps, photos of the previous lans, something like that.
Cheap, cheerful and really useful. Any thoughts?

How about at the FF we can make a dedicated server for say original CS or HL2 Deathmatch, tap the Uni network and see if we can broadcast the game on the net. We have 4 comps set up to play on the stall and let freshers take turns playing.

Whoa, there. Tapping into the uni network is officially not allowed. And we won't have a cable that long as the freshers fair is in the hunter halls (I think)

I was planning to get some "print your own" CD's from the shop round the corner. THey're about £10 for 50 cd labels, and £10 for the kit. For not a lot of cash, we could get a really good product for the freshers.
What about the idea of "Red Team" and "Blue Team" stickers?
Sounds good. Stickers are dirt cheap, printing is nice and simple.
What about t-shirts as well? Nice, recognisable and professional.

nvm. How about a mini LAN just at the stall then. We won't get many in but hey. We can give em a taste. Perhaps a comp to see who can get the most headshots on CS original (Sideshow not included).

Personally, I think it would be better to get a laptop for transport and desk space. My wife has one I can purloin for a few days, it will be fine for vids etc. THe graphics card in there is shite, but it's fine for vids and dvds.
Thanks very much for the offer though.

You could use my laptop for it. Long as it isnt graphic intensive. It can play CS:S with minimal detail so good ol CS 1.6 would be fine on it.

This sounds good guys. Which logo we thinking of using? Maybe the Website logo? or maybe the spray I cooked up? If we did T-shirts, could have one on the front, one on the back.
As far as "showing games" at the Fair, I think, just something to get interest would be best. Nothing fancy. Maybe use emulators? Play some Super Bomberman? Guilty Gear? Something involving gamepads so people can just jump in if they want. I know it's not a represention of the games we play at lan's but it would get attention. Otherwise replays as suggested and RedvBlue are good. Having a few people playing CS may look kinda boring were as bright colours (maybe Sonic even) would get lots of eyes. Could use them for my new cyborg.

Brave anouncement there, nearly came screaming down to your flat with a sharp stick........
....but good idea. Was just thinknig about using emulators when I remembered that it's illegal. So, maybe not such a good idea presenting the young ones with illegal gaming. Maybe get Sideshows cute little PS2 and get some Soulcaliber 2 action on the go?

I do own the cartriages for Sonic 2 (Mega Drive), Street Fighter II, Mario All Stars and Mortal Kombat II for the SNES. So, if I'm playing them on an emulator, it's legal?

I doubt they'd care if their legal or not, doubt theyd even know heh.
Hmm I can donate a sony or a ferguson small TV if its any help. PS2 games wise... Red Faction 2?

24th August 2005, 18:47
erm, do you really think we should be showing them crappy 1st person games on a console? If we're going to do that, we should be playing Goldeneye on the N64......that's the daddy. :D
Phizz
25th August 2005, 00:43
Goldeneye was definately the daddy. I could always see if my flatmate is coming back early cos he has a SNES with the most awesome, original and best Mario Kart! Also if you're bringing a N64 se if you can get Kart 64 or perhaps Conker's Bad Fur Day. They both have awesome gameplay.
Bluepixie

Without exception do NOT allow the pixie to 'demo' the games. Watching him play Goldeneye was enough to make me cry like a girl and want my mommy. Head shots with a joypad?!!!? Not an issue when you spend ALL YOUR LIFE playing goldeneye. It will put off the more casual gamer.

So how many people are we looking at having helping out?
CaNNoN_FoDDa
25th August 2005, 14:36
i think its more likely to be a question of when people are available and how long they can take it. i think i can prolly turn up at 9 on the first day (or whenever it starts) but my work dont usually phone me til the day before they need me. i also take a long time to get bored, so i think i can probly take it for 2 days without too much trouble (if there is an N64 lying around, i could probly go for a couple of weeks without moving).
So that's 1.
If someone is bringing a tv, i can bring an xbox plus Halo (ewch), Midtown Madness (:s) and Mortal Combat DA (:s) (i have others, but peeps wouldnt be able to just leap right in [storyline-driven]). If someone is bringing an N64, i'll just throw the xbox out of a window then sit in a corner and cry.
DAve
25th August 2005, 15:00
I think there needs to be 4 at the very most on the stall, preferably 3. We've not got a lot of space to work with, and it would be very handy to give the people not on the stall a few flyers etc to go to hand out etc.
Goldeneye would be very nice. It kind of sums up what the club is about in a round package of goodness.
CaNNoN_FoDDa
25th August 2005, 16:54
That sounds like a plan.
Bloody typical that the job agency should call and offer me an interview on the fourteenth that happens to be about as far from Glasgow Uni as it is possible to get while remaining in (the greater) Glasgow (area).
Ah, well. it might not happen.
and im still gonna try and get buckets of penny sweets, btw.

Don't you worry! I have an N64 (that still sees regular use) 6 game pads (all different colours) and the memory expansion. I can bring mine. However, the BLUE PAD IS MINE! TOUCH IT AND DIE!

Freshers fair is on the Wednesday and thursday (14th & 15th) i.e. next week.
I have said that I'm coming, as has bluepixie. He's organising a banner, and hopefully bringing the N64 and goldeneye.
I've got a 14" TV spare and can bring it along.
Cannon_fodda has said he might be along, (on the 15th?).
Are you still free to help out Exuus? Between the 4 of us, I think we have a working stall.
I'll print out some flyers, and get the freshers CD organised & printed. That's the task for thurs / friday this week.
Sweets and stuff are optional, but the main thing is we greet the freshers, get a few quid out of them, and tell them about the first few lans of the year. Hopefully even giving them a reason to come along :)
Also, need to get their emails and names for affiliation.
Affiliation tangent: needs to be in by Early november, will chat in the pub if everyone is there. For this, we need a committee and a bank account. Easily acheivable in a month's time.

The Freshers fair is in the john mac, hunter halls and concert halls
10-4 on Wednesday and thursday
It's good to know that the SRC are being their efficient selves.
Seriously though, I'm really pissed off that it took an email to find out where and when the freshers fair is. Frankly I don't hold much hope for the SRC (Heather in particular) as they've already managed to fuck up the freshers fair and it's not even day 1 of the term yet.
