Go to the business gateway online or in person they are free advice centre for a start up business. Copyrights and such like require lawyers and all that jazz so only worth it if you know it's worth money. Edinburgh University has 4 full time copyright lawyers to deal with thier crap so I'm guessing that it's pretty hardcore.

Copyright doesn't require a lawyer. Copyright comes into effect the instant that pen comes to paper, so to speak. It's only patents and trade marks that require any actual legal application and money.

Not quite, the dispute in copyright is vast, for instance if you were to put pen to paper during work time you'll find that you probably don't own the IP for whatever you do, your work would. And all sorts of other crazy shit. That is why you need lawyers and soliciters. Not worth the hassle in general. Why are you asking btw.

the university has a dedicated unit that deals with spin-off companies that might help with issues such as this. I've forgotten what they call it exactly, but they might be willing to help on the specifics, or definitely would be able to point you in the right place.
