3 v 3 Counter-Strike Source Tournament at February LAN

gor and myself will be running a 3v3 Counter-Strike Source tournament at the upcoming LAN. The idea is a little competitive play with your mates - so we'd hope that people pick a team of 3 friends, rather than trying to group together the best players.

Tournament Structure

Maps

de_dust
de_aztec
de_dust2
de_train

Matches

To be confirmed on Saturday afternoon.

Rules

The style of the tournament is 2 groups where each team plays every other team in the group, with the winners of the two groups playing each other in the final.

Knife fights should be used to choose sides. Pistols should be kept and the bomb should be dropped at Terrorist spawn. If you fire a weapon/nade/flash and hit a member of the opposite team then your side loses the knife fight.

Each game will have 12 round each half and all 24 rounds must be played. Rules are simple - 1 point for a win, 0 for a lose. The team with the most points wins the group and will play in the final. In the event of a tied group - the amount of rounds won by your team is totalled and the highest number of rounds wins. In the event of a team leaving early before all 24 rounds are played, the other team recieves the remainder of the rounds.

In the event of a 12-12 draw in the final, teams will play one overtime of 3 rounds with $10000 startmoney. The team that won knives can choose which side they start overtime. The first team to win 2 rounds is the winner.

In the event of a team no showing for their scheduled match, after 10 minutes an admin may decide to aware a default 24-0 victory to the other team.

Game Settings

For those of you who are interested, we will be using the following match settings for all games. The ones to remember are 1:45 roundtime, 35 second bomb timer, friendly fire is on and obviously force camera 1,

Surly Muppet doesn't need team mates.

My team will probably consist of me, my flatmate (elfelfbaby) and who ever else want to run around spraying a P90. We will most likely come last.

Teams are gradually filling up. Please continue to post if you have a team or are looking for a team to join. Note: this isn't restricted to 6 teams so if there is a demand, more teams can be created.

No worries - I'll stick you down as not having a team yet. Teams that are short of a player with single people can find people looking for a team there and at the end, we can always group people into teams.

OK, so we've not got 6 teams worth of people + 2 extra. Ideally, we'd get another 4 people to play so that we've got an even number of teams. Alternatively, one more player to make 7 full teams would be fine and we could work out some kind of tournament structure.

I'd be interested to know if people have any ideas for the tournament structure. Criterea are:
a. must last a maximum of 3 hours @ 30 minutes per game (you can assume unlimited server resources).
b. must include everyone in all games prior to the final (it isn't really fair to have people sitting around doing nothing. i suppose a secondary game could be going in the background ??)
c. must result in there being a final (everyone loves a final :))

7 teams round-robin-ing would possibly work. 6 games per team with points being counted and the top two teams could play in a final later.

Sid
17th January 2007, 00:53
Oh also, can you guys decide on team names and post them here, please.

Sid
17th January 2007, 01:06
A round robin would required 6 rounds @ roughly one round scheduled every 45 minutes = >4 hours = too much.

I've come up with a basic group system where the winners of each group will play each other in a final.

Some people have mentioned to me that those groups are rubbish. Don't worry - I just split it a, b, c etc. to show the tournament structure. The groups will be fairly evenly balanced.

I'm thinking:

Group A:
Sexpanther
Team Puppet
Octavion's team
Team G

Group B:
Pickles Protocol
FRIENDLY FIRE!
In America
Team H

Is there something wrong with 3 rounds of Swiss Pairings then a top 4 cut? Seems better than a spit, and works quite well for pairing top teams against each other.

Not going to play in this, may be instead of:

Top of group A vs Top of group B in the final ,

make it;

Top of group A vs Second in grourp B and Second of group A vs Top of groupB

Then final would be the two winners?

That would add an one extra game time since, since the "semi" could be played at the same time. And it would give the two group more of a chance to qualify...
( took the idea from champions league football)

Have you checked if that's ok with Octavion and elfelfbaby?

That's why I'm posting on this thread, rather than just editing the post; I presume they'll read it before the lan :)

so, what I guess I should've posted was:

Octavion and elfelfbaby, do you want me on your team?

Sid
22nd January 2007, 15:59
Ah right, okay. I think the best way to do it is if the teams pick out players from the ones remaining. I'd like to get the teams finalised by a few days before the LAN.

So... if Muppet and Octavion could pick a player each for their team and then that'll be 6 teams sorted. I think 2 remaining teams could be made up on the day?

Sid
22nd January 2007, 16:24
Oops, missed Ming's post.

make it;

Top of group A vs Second in grourp B and Second of group A vs Top of groupB

Then final would be the two winners?

Even though the semis could be played at the same time, it still adds another 45 minutes to the tournament as it's a whole new round. I'm trying to keep this around the 2.5 - 3 hour mark.

The structure maybe isn't quite ideal, but we've got to keep this a fun, fast tournament.

Are you coming to the LAN, by the way?

I would consider it my lifelong duty to run around with a P90 shouting "Woooooooo"!.

As a side note, please ensure you have voted for Office as the map of choice if you haven't already! We must ensure it's longevity.

FRIENDLY FIRE! vs. In America - Server 3

Although I am sure we will doubtlessly emerge victorious, and in all probability unharmed, but I ask at this stage for all supporters possible to rally round us in our fight against the greatest of all evils. Look at them like the Empire, Larry is Vader, Iain the Emperor and Scratch is obviously the Fett-man. We are the Rebel Alliance, myself (obviously) Chewbacca, Peter as C3PO and the Pit as the ever endearing Jar Jar Binks.

I hadn't said anything before because I ddn't want to leave Larry and Stu in the lurch, but since stu isn't gonna make it for the tourney and larry has found other teammates, I can drop out. The organisation for this has been disrespectful and pretty much obnoxious, and I don't want to take part in it. You can take my name of the list.

sighface

when a man pees standing up, it's "normal," but when a woman does it, it's "weeeird." when men shave their balls it's fine, but when a woman does it she's "straaange."

It just isn't fair, is it, Mr. King?

Uh, well I'm not sure exactly what you point is Gor, but I realise I haven't really made one either, so I'll elaborate:

Sid made a poll to decide which maps to play in the tourny.
Pit complained his favourite map wasn't in the list of options.
Sid put it in the poll.
People voted for it.
Sid said "yeah, people voted for it but I'm just going to ignore them"
Pit said "So you didn't think anyone would vote for it and put it in just to shut me up"
Sid said "Yep"
Pit complained and wondered if the commitee had any say in this
Sid exploded

Basically, office should never have been added to the vote if Sid had no intention of putting it in. Once it was added, the decision of the vote should have been abided by, even if it meant putting in a cs map in a tournament.

Really, this should never have been a vote in the first place. The guys running the tournament should have just picked good maps. The ridiculously insulting nature of sid's response was beyond acceptable, especially for someone who is effectively on the commitee which runs the society.

I'm also disappointed with the other forum mods for not, well, modding. The same could be said for Fyndir's openly insulting replies to Mogwai. Oh, wait, he's a mod too. Being a douchebag to people on the net is all well and good when nothing can happen to you, but we *LAN* together. You actually have to be in the same room as the people you're denigrating, and having a mess of bad blood between members isn't going to be good for anybody.

Last I heard from Sid (who's one of the forum Admins, and therefore kind of in charge of the mods) we were meant to be moderating as little as possible because he preferred it that way.

If you want me to mod more then I can do that, but within a few weeks I'll almost certainly have people whining about there being too much moderating, so who do I listen to then?

I deliberately avoid moderating in threads that I feel strongly about, or that I've been involved in arguments in, because biased moderation tends to be fairly wank. =/

What? I said I personally prefer not moderating much as I don't feel our club forums needs moderating much other than removing spam posts and moving occasional topics.

I like mods, frankly because the topics drift way off thread sometimes.

The key thing here is consistency. If I know what mods are likely to do, then I'm comfortable with that. Other than that, use your best judgement and be good to each other.

Thanks in particular to Muppet, Yega, Strings and Jan who helped us admin the matches and thanks to Viper for letting us show the final on his projector. Feel free to post any comments or perhaps suggestions for future CS tournaments.

CSS tourney was definately a success in my eyes and should be the center piece (or one of the main) tournaments every LAN from now on. Having the extra servers provided by Sid and gor helped a lot for the flow of the tournament to run smoothly.

Server 1 was a little laggy/wraping at times though :o - server 2 was good though :)

12th February 2007, 20:47
Cheers for the positive feedback so far, I know, for the most part, what needs worked on, but we appreciate all input. Server 1 played host to the best game in each round and the SourceTV - We didn't test SourceTV much prior to game time; turns out it was a real hog. Server 1 was switched to the athlon box for the final which made a difference.

Some minor complaints of spiking/ warping in some games are also noted: cpu usage was minimal, so im swaying towards network issues, server settings or rates. We will investigate this for the next lan (if the committee want us back :p).

Hopefully the tourney success this LAN will ripple and appeal to all those who enjoy cs, whether it’s a bit of fun with mates or those with a keen competitive drive. Who knows, if we are in the 40’s next LAN, we might need to consider teams of four: I simply cannot wait. :)
