I am a huge D&D and RPG fan. I play pen and paper D&D when I can but no one ever wants to :(

You should come along to GUGS (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/tankypoos/GUGS/) where we play tabletop RPGs on Tuesdays in the QMU food factory. Then you can see the hilarity of me dying every time I have to make a fortitude save.

Told ya she was a real geek. I also think it would be great for you to come to GUGS. As well as Oct's awesome fortitude rolls in 3rd ed D&D there are loads of other games going on which I'm sure you'll be able to find a space at. /shameless plug

Ok, i love KOTAR and KOTAR II but you need to get the community made fix for KOTAR II to make it the game it should have been, the missing storylines and influence quests have been reintroduced as well as a ton of other stuff that should have been in from the start. It's worth another playthrough once you patch it properly. Personally I'm waiting for the full version before trying again, but the last version I tried was MUCH better than the original. And the lightsabers always look good.

I shall find the website at somepoint and post it here.

Regarding your author choice:

Philip K Dick > Frank Herbert

I LOVE Dune, and have read some of Herberts other stuff but P.K. Dick is in another legue. Read Ubik and A Scanner Darkly (then watch the film) and you'll know why. Man in High Castle is reputedly Dicks best work but that is shite. It is probably his most accessable work which is why folk think it is great.

In general, yes. Don't read more than 3 books in series though. I did, and got really depressed. He's a fantastic author, but there's too much of a good thing.

What time is the table top gaming on at and what would I need to bring? I have my precious dice obviously on me at all times just in case I encounter any hobgoblins on Buyer's road.

I have played Diablo II yonkies ago but wasn't immensely keen on it, however I may give it another go.

GUGS is every Tuesday at the QMU in the food factory from about 6PM we'll be the geeky people loitering at the far end of the food factory. You can usually spot as the ones who don't just play magic on the opposite side of the room from the rest of the society.

I will come along at about 6ish then. With my dice. And wander over and randomly introduce myself. Going to a party later that night (crazy American friend's Fat Tueday day before lent celebration - lot's of dessert and wine :p)
so I won't be able to stay long.

On the recruiting hotter guys front, I would say that you should give Sean Bean a call.. But no, that is certainly a conundrum, why don't girls game (en general) I think it's a culture thing me self.

Thank you for the Philip K. Dick recommendation!

Actually "The Beanster" does pop in now and again but he's been a bit shy since Larry and Ru pwnzed him and Mortensen at 2v2 DoW. Now the Hollywood types have heard of the boys' fearsome reputations they're all just a bit chicken.

There may be an opening in our game of 3rd Ed D&D if you're interested. I'll have a word with the German one know as Lambert.

Asrylia
22nd February 2007, 17:01
Oh wow! Very interested! I love D&D. What setting is it? Forgotten realms? Oh, and I'm guessing you mean 3.5? :D Oh wow! I'm excited I haven't played D&D since.. *eyes fog over* since, June!! I. I will play any character neccessary.. especially if I get to create them. :D

Octavion
23rd February 2007, 10:02
It's forgotten realms and it's 3.0 with bits of 3.5 that aren't shit mixed in. Our party currently has a fighter (specialising in bows), a binder (me), a wizard (who is obsessed with fireballs and magic missiles), a dragonkin sorcerer, and a plain touched cleric of Tempus. So you'd be pretty much free to play anything you want.

Asrylia

How about a halfling or elven rogue? Depending on what takes me fancy? Shall I create a level 1? Alignment wise does anything go?

Chesire Cat
24th February 2007, 12:43
OK, you've got me there. Is there anything we can do to appeal more to the female gamer?

advertise as a male harem? ru and sid would prolly sell. :P

ok seriously, we just need to get ANY advertising out. So far, we've either not put up posters, or only put them up the week before a LAN at the earliest. The only reason current members know when the next LAN will be, is because they're current members and those who frequent the forums can easily look it up. We could be getting more new people by putting up posters/passing out flyers the day after a LAN. Like we should start advertising the April LAN the day after the March LAN. Even if only a few new people sign up and only like 1 or 2 of them come to a LAN, we'll have reached a wider audience, and people will pass it on to gamers they know.

to get more female members would be a bit trickier. and for that, i'm afraid you're stuck. there just aren't many female gamers. They all join GUGS. :\

Asrylia had a good theory for this: guys prefer the hands on experience of playing the game and seeing it happening which is why they tend towards computer games. Whilst girls prefer the mental aspect (which is not to say men are stupid) merely that imagination and abstract gaming is more appealing. which is why GUGS has more female members. By my reconing, of the 25 odd people there at the last meeting, about 10-12 were female.

WAY off topic and WAAAY late... :s

ah well... HALFLING BARD FTW!

Octavion
25th February 2007, 19:51
Halfling bard is possible the lamest character possible.

Mountain Orc barbarian is the win!

HALFLING BARD FOR THE WIN DAMNIT! my god. pair it up with a dwarf fighter and you could do some sexiliscious combos! like have the halfling hide in the dwarfs beard and jump out and surprise attack the enemy! :D i'd totally do that!

I think with a bard, you *need* to know *how* to play them. Yes, they are the shittest class in close combat and yes they die easily, but I'm sure they can be used effectively somehow...Halfling Rogues are great!!! Good Dex, Listen, Hide etc... bonuses and they are cute!

What is the aim of it ? to level up or to complete the game or to kill other players??

To explore the environment and to do cool stuff with your funky powers, imho.

It's a good fun game to play casually, just bumble around the landscape killing weird creatures and take their stuff. Some people do take it too seriously though, although I suppose there are people like that in every game.

No.

Played it to 42 with one character.

Played it to various levels with other characters.

Tried RP servers.

Tried "Normal" servers.

Found it continuously repetitive and boring with nothing to excite me in any way, at all. =/

GingerPrinz
28th February 2007, 10:42
So how many instances did you run, how much PVP did you play, how many 10,20,40 man raids did you go on, were you a member of a good guild that had regular events and a good social scene, did you play with friends???

Or were you more like the guy in the South Park episode?

Fyndir
28th February 2007, 13:58
So how many instances did you run

Too many.

Instances were largely just as boring as "regular" hunting, the only difference being I'm doing it with more people.

Beating your head off of a brick wall does not suddenly become entertaining just because you're doing it with more people.

how much PVP did you play

A fair amount, if I saw someone worth fighting I fought them.

how many 10,20,40 man raids did you go on

A few 10 and 20, only a couple of 40.

were you a member of a good guild that had regular events and a good social scene, did you play with friends???

I played with friends, but most of the "good" guilds that people told me about were full of tits, tbh.

The game did not interest me in any way, the only factor of it which I never got to fully experience was the "end game" PVP and stuff, but I consider the argument that "the game doesn't start till 60" (which I've heard from a few people before now) to be utter shite, if the game doesn't start until I've poured a year or so into it (yes, I leveled slowly, I didn't have the same fanatical devotion that many people display and would generally get bored after a few hours of play) then that's a major problem, imho.

GingerPrinz
28th February 2007, 14:17
I agree that the game starts long before level 60. Doesn't sound like you've ever played in the battlegrounds tho, which are tremendous fun and a gerat test of skill. Instancing is absolutely nothing like hunting, if you played it thus then you were doing it wrong I am sorry to say. A good guild is not necesarily a successful guild, but one which operates well (uses a bank, has regular raids and events, top support for starting players). The lore and storyline of the game is incredibly rich and detailed, that is what keeps so many people coming back for more with multiple characters to experience all facets of the game. I guess from what you're saying that you started playing it in an early stage of it's release. As I'm sure you are aware there are regular patches and content updates to make the game constantly more compelling and entertaining, so if you don't like the style of the game, then fair enough, but if content was an issue for you then you should play it again before badmouthing it further. Besides, why badmouth it at all? Enjoy the games you enjoy, let that be the end of it.

YcMing
28th February 2007, 22:36
I don't think fyndir was bad mouthing the game all, all he stated was he doesn'e enjoy the game.

and if is that great of a game it does not need convincing at all :).

"which are tremendous fun and a gerat test of skill"

What type of skills do you mean or need:P? I mean surely if you play the game long enough you will level up.

got to agree tho, if u love the game you will get addicted :) after seeing my cousin playing it.

I think Dave's point (and he'll correct me if I'm wrong (probably before this post is posted)) was that if your idea of roleplaying is minmaxing characters, killing monsters and stealing loot, then WoW is the game for you (as that is what it *is*), and you should check it out. If you've already tried it and don't like it, then you can ignore the suggestion.

GingerPrinz
1st March 2007, 13:10
/applause

Oh and Ming, you don't actually level in battlegrounds, their like little side games that are (pretty much) PvP only and are themed, like Capture the Flag, Take and Hold, kille the enemy general etc.

Phizz
1st March 2007, 13:23
If you don't like the idea of level grinding EVE is based on time leveling. This is not even in game time this is real time skill learning. Sure it may take approximately 10years to get every available skill to lvl 5 but that is what makes it so rewarding. You have to know your strengths and weaknesses and you now start with approximately 900,000 skill points so there is less chance to whine about being killed off the bat.

It does take time to get into some of the more expensive ships but tbh. The skill comes in fitting and using what you've got and there is always something to strive for.

Yeah, I have to agree about Warcraft. I played it to about level 43 with a Gnomish Fighter. At first I thought it was great, exploring strange lands, buying new items, forming groups to complete quests!

However, the gameplay quickly becomes boring and repetitive and it is difficult to find sane people to quest with who have ever heard the word "tactics" before. Also, I didn't like the fact that when you die you have to find your body.... argh!!

I'm hardly going to delete my own posts, since I clearly felt they were worth posting. If one of the other moderators or administrators feels that they need deleted then that's within their power to do. 0_o

Feel free to use the "Report Post" button if you feel a post needs deleted, that's what it's there for.

Just to make it clear, his post was "Us kids know, No cars go.", which is a line (or possibly two lines) from a song, I fail to see how random song lyrics added anything to the conversation. =/
